6th Grade Camp

Every year BMMS students attend Sixth Grade Camp at Camps Cuyamaca and Fox .  The Outdoor Education Program, according to its mission statement, “provides students with experiential learning programs that enhance awareness and scientific understanding of the natural world and their connection to it. These programs also provide opportunities for social growth, self-reliance and teamwork.” This is truly a rich experience; many students find it to be the highlight of their school year.

Please carefully review the information and checklist below (printable version). Being properly prepared is the key to having a successful week. Any questions regarding camp can be directed toward your child’s Basic Education teacher, or by visiting the SDCOE website at www.sdcoe.net/outdoored.

• Drop Off Procedures:

  • Students should arrive at school between 8:00 - 8:30 am. (Expect heavy traffic - car pooling encouraged.) Leave camp gear in the lobby of the Multi-Purpose Room/Big Gym. Mark bags, suitcases, sleeping bags, etc. with child's name and the camp they are attending.
  • Students will report to their first period teacher for the purpose of attendance and will be dismissed to the buses from that class.
  • Student's camp gear will be loaded onto a truck around 9:00 to 9:30 am. Parent Volunteers are needed to help load.
  • Students will depart by bus at approximately 9:15 to 9:30 am.

• Return Procedures:
• Students will return to Black Mountain Middle School at approximately 12:15 - 12:30 pm. (Time may vary depending on traffic).
• Student's gear will arrive at approximately 12:00 - 12:30 pm. Parent volunteers are needed to help unload.
• Students are dismissed for the balance of the day and will NOT return to their classroom. Please plan to be on time to pick up your child.
• Students are not advised to walk home carrying their gear nor are they permitted to ride the bus with their gear. Please make arrangements for your student.

• Students remaining at BMMS will be placed in another sixth grade classroom at BMMS for the week.

Come Visit Student Services Center

• Call the student services at 484-1300 Ext. 3047 if you have questions.

• Power Hour - After school program open to all students wanting assistance with homework assignments. High school tutors and teacher support available. The assistance runs from 2:27 to 3:30 and the room varies by grade. Listen for announcements each week.

• Paid Peer Tutors - Students requiring one on one tutors, may set up an after school paid tutor program. Eighth grade students (earning a 3.5 grade point average or above and meeting behavior standards) can be hired to tutor students one to three days per week. Tutors support the student with daily homework, organizational skills, and test taking strategies.

Special Interest Clubs

• FCA - Fellowship of Christian Athletes is open to all student athletes and it focuses on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ.

Science Olympiad

Science Olympiad is a national competition that was designed to increase students' interest in science and to provide recognition for outstanding achievement. Students compete with a partner in events of their choosing. There are 23 events including academic, lab, or device-building activities. Students practice in weekly, one-hour meetings beginning in October and continuing until the regional competition in February and the state competition for 2006 will be held in April.

Black Mountain middle school has had a very successful record of plcing first or second in the last 9 years. Team meetings are held after school to communicate latest information to the students and to discuss any issues that have arisen during event meetings.

AVID - Advancement Via Individual Determination

The Avid program is designed to prepare students, who are average academically, for college and to help them enhance their academic, study, and organizational skills.

Selection Process:

• AVID is open to 7th and 8th grade students only.
• AVID Student selection focuses on students in the middle, meaning those students who have between a 2.0 - 3.5 G.P.A. These students have the academic potential, given AVID support, to improve their overall academic achievement and to attend a four-year college.
• AVID students rank 50%-80% in their standardized tests.
• AVID students are often in the first generation of their family to attend college.
• Students selected must be intrinsically motivated and well behaved.
• AVID students are often underrepresented in college (ie: minority status).
• AVID students are often economically disadvantaged (participate in the free and reduced fee lunch program).
• AVID students may have experienced difficult circumstances in their lives (divorce, death, and/or disease of loved ones).
• Interested students must meet the academic criteria, apply for the program, and undergo an interview prior to acceptance in the AVID program.
• Applications will be available in the counseling office beginning in February 2006.
• Interviews will take place in March and selected students will be informed by the end of the school year.

Once accepted into the AVID program, the students will attend an AVID class each day where study, organizational, and academic skills will be taught.
