Remembering our friend and sister scout, Nini
Lowrey
January 31, 1989-February 16, 1997
Day is done,
Gone the sun,
From the lake,
From the hills,
From the sky
All is well
Safely rest
God is nigh.
Nini's Story
"On the bright Sunday afternoon of February 16,
1997, Nini Marie Lowrey held the hand of a friend
and headed for a playground she never reached. And
now, for everyone who knew her, San Diego will never
again be quite as sunny."
-- from the memorial service program
Nini was born in Wuhan City in the People's Republic of
China. When she was three, her biological mother died.
Ying Lowrey, an aunt who lived in America, along with
her husband Preston Lowrey III, worked for three years
to adopt her and bring her to San Diego.
She arrived in America in August, 1995. In the months
that followed, she attended school; learned English;
took lessons in art, math, dance, and the cello; and
made lots of friends.
In August, 1996, Nini's adoptive father
Preston Lowrey was one of three San Diego State
professors shot during a meeting with a graduate
student. Our troop planted a tree at the school in his
memory and, as an unexpected but happy result of our
service project, Nini joined that day. In the next three
months, we saw her blossom in the companionship of her
Brownie friends and our many activities.
Nini loved the color pink, collecting stickers,
riding her bike, dancing to Disney music, her dolls, her
pearl necklace, playing hide-and-seek, anything Lisa
Frank, her new dollhouse, playing the cello, and
giggling with her friends. She was our friend and we
will all miss her terribly.
Remembering Nini
A memorial fund has been set up at Adobe Bluffs
Elementary in memory of Nini. The fund will assist
the educational program, particularly English as a
Second Language. Checks may be sent payable to "Nini
Lowrey -- Adobe Bluffs Educational Fund" at 8707
Adobe Bluffs Drive, San Diego, CA 92129.
The 5th Grade Class of
2007 donated $500.00 to the Redesigning and
Replanting of Nini's Garden. We have invited Girl
Scout Leagues every month to help maintain and
replant flowers in the Garden .What a wonderful
tribute this has been this year. This would have
been Nini's graduation year from her Girls Scout
league. Her memory will live on forever in our
hearts and stay alive in her Garden.
