Assessments OF learning (summative):
include any tools that measure students' performance at the end of a predetermined amount of instruction. Generally they are formal, traditional assessments used when no further instruction is planned.

Assessments FOR learning (formative):
are usually integrated with instruction and provide continuous feedback for both the teacher and the student. They provide descriptive information about strengths, weaknesses, and growth that point to next steps in the instructional process.
