SIX VERY IMPORTANT RESOURCES

STUDENT TASK DEFINITION

Working in groups of three (3), you will explore six (6) very important resources of the RBHS library and explore the resources and problems of the tropical rain forest.

You will learn about the

    • Indigenous peoples
    • Animals unique to the rain forest
    • Plants of the rain forest used for medicine
    • Ecotourism in the rain forest
    • Businesses in the rain forest
    • Settlers in the rain forest.

You will find information relating to these topics in

    • Books (CatalogPlus)
    • Magazines (Wilson Readers' Guide)
    • SIRS (Social Interest Resources Series)
    • CD-ROM (The Rainforest)
    • E-Library
    • Pre-selected Internet sites (see handout).

You will receive an individual grade based on

    • A group presentation to the class of your research findings
    • A test of your knowledge of library resources
    • A test on the information presented in the oral presentation
    • Completion of the worksheets.

Schedule

Day 1 Introduction to unit
Introduction to library resources

Day 2 Use of library resources to locate information

Day 3 Use of library resources and development of oral presentation

Day 4 Oral presentation. Test.

    1. What kind of information will I find there?
    2. Is than an index or full text resource?
    3. Do I use keyword, subject, or topic search?
    4. Why will this be a good place to look for rain forest information?
    5. What do I need for the bibliography?
    6. Do I need to fill out a request form to get this material?
    7. How do I get to the program? How do I exit the program correctly?  How do I print or save information?
