Upper Elementary, Middle School and High School

  • Ratheon has created an amazing real-world website: Math Moves U.  It is filled with celebrities and sports heroes sharing how math is used in their fields. There are weekly math contests, great prizes, and grant opportunities.
     
  • Math in Sports: Mathletics
     
  • The National Math Trail: students across the nation explore their communities and create math problems related to issues, geography, or challenges that are unique to them.
     
  • The Futures Channel internet site provides short videos highlighting real world science careers. They also create four page teaching guides to build a curricular connection with concepts featured in the video. Sign up to receive a newsletter with teaching ideas and an announcement of the movie of the week.

    They recently added a section of videos of algebra in the real world. You'll especially enjoy the one of Amar Bose describing how he determined the best solution for blocking unwanted noise in headphones or one where a mathematician created a probability map to help find the largest sunken gold treasure in US history!
