Module 2

Module two will focus on the value of internet technology in the classroom environment.  You will be asked to explore the question "Is It Worth It?"

Task 1: Virtual Architecture
(Estimated Time = 1/2 hr)
Due March 31

You are going to explore the introduction to a wonderful book written by Judi Harris.  Judi will talk about the difference between educentric and technocentric staff development, set the stage for using activity structures, and help us determine "Is It Worth It?"  Not to mention, you just gotta love the sniglets.

  • Visit Wetware: Why Use Activity Structures?  While reading the article, select one sentence that strikes you, and post it on the discussion board.   Make sure it's a new thread in Craft Module 2.
  • Reflect on the article, and your experience with using technology in the classroom.  Did Judi's words produce any "ah-ha" experiences for you, or did it support "what you have been saying" for years? No need to post a discussion thread. Unless you can't resist the urge.
Task 2: Ewe 2
(Estimated Time = 1 1/2 hr)
Due April 2

Is It Worth It?: "If a particular educational use of Internet tools and resources is going to be "worth it," according to the definition that I suggested above, it must enable students to do something that they need or want to do, either that they haven't been able to do before, or they haven't been able to do as well."  It's time for you to look at a sample activity, and apply the "Is It Worth It Test." Please remember that although Ewe 2  was built for a high school science audience, it is much like a sniglet.  It is an Activity Structure that can be applied across both curriculum and grade level.

  • Surf your way through Ewe 2, and spend some time exploring the project.  Keep Judi's "Worth it Test" firmly in mind.
  • Ewe 2 is huge, so I would like to give each of you a focus.

Telecollaboration Experts
Be on the lookout for spots in Ewe 2 where students are asked to interact with other students or experts. How does "distant" collaboration support the project?   Apply the "Worth it Test."

Teleresearch Experts
How is internet research being handled in Ewe 2, and how does this research support the project. Apply the "Worth it Test."

Case Study Experts
Your job is to investigate the "case study" approach.  What is it, and how does it support learning? Apply the "Worth it Test."

Infotective Experts
In Grazing the Net, Jamie McKenzie says "The Question is the Answer." Your role is to investigate how "questioning" is handled in Ewe 2. Apply the "Worth it Test."

  • Take a journey to our discussion board. Give us your overall view of the project. (Make sure that you move to the Module 2 forum and type your "role" in the topics textbox.)
  • Take the time to read through all the "expert" analysis, and post a reply to one group.
Task 3: Reflection
(Estimated Time = 1/2 hr)
Due April 3
  • Apply the "Judi's Worth it Test" to a technology project that you have used with your students.  It may be something that you have created or maybe a project that you found. (MayaQuest, Scholastic, National Geographic) Does it pass the "Worth it Test?"  Is it important that it passes the test? No need to post a discussion thread. Unless you can't resist the urge.
  • Take a few minutes to review the discussion board.  Read through your classmate's thoughts in both modules 1 and 2.  Feel free to reply to your new techno-buddies.
Task 4: Your Thoughts
(Estimated Time = 1/2 hr)
Due April 3

How did week two go?  Please comment on the flow between module 1 and 2. Do they seem related?   Please drop me an email.

If classroom teachers can monitor and adjust, why not on-line teachers?
