Ethnobotany is the study of
the plant lore and agricultural customs of a group of people.
Third graders from Pomerado Elementary School in Poway have
created 20 cards that describe the use of native plants of San Diego by
the Kumeyaay. If the plant is mentioned in Indians of the Oaks,
students included the quote and a page reference.
To print plant cards to use on field trips to Mission Trails
Regional Park, click on the titles under the picture to the right. Each card can be printed
on photo paper or cardstock, folded in half, and laminated. They
may load slowly because they are high resolution for excellent
print quality.
Plan to have Ethnobotany Moments as your students hike
through Mission Trails. Give each student a plant card. When
he or she finds the plant along the trail, have everyone freeze
while the student shares Ethnobotany Highlights.
