Session 2
To view WebQuests that were completed this summer go to Teach The Teachers web page and select " See Summer 2000 WebQuests ".
Before we begin today, it is very important that you log in on the computer you are in front of right now. Hopefully you are not logged in anywhere else.
In order to get started we will first create a Folder on the Desktop. From the desktop, right click on your mouse and select New and then select Folder. Name the folder TEMP. Now you will download a WebQuest template. There are three different views. Choose New Framed Versions with Graphic Text Rollovers. This will serve as the template for your project. Choose the zipped version for PC's and click on it. When the dialogue box appears choose save this file to disk. Then say OK. Now navigate to your desktop and choose SAVE. There should now be a zipped file on your desktop. Double click on the file and then choose extract. In the extract to dialogue box, make sure it says C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\TEMP. Click on Extract and then close Winzip. You have now successfully downloaded your template.
You are now ready to begin working on your WebQuest. Go to the start button then go to programs and choose to Netscape Communicator and then click on Netscape Composer. Choose Open and navigate to your desktop. Now open your Temp folder and you will see a folder called "mywebquest". Double click on it and choose a page to begin editing. I suggest you begin with the introduction.htm file.
VERY IMPORTANT- In order to save your work, you must choose the preview button located on the toolbar for Netscape Communicator. Once you choose preview, your work has been saved.
The rest of today is designed for you to begin your research for your WebQuest. A good place to store your links can be found by choosing Open from Netscape Communicator and looking in the "mywebquest" box. Then choose my files and open and finally choose my links and open. Leave this page open during your research so you can cut and paste any sites you find right onto this page along with a brief description of the site for later reference. Remember, until you hit the Preview button, nothing has been saved.
Our final step for the day is to save your work for the day. You must be logged in to the network from the computer you are working from in order to do this. After you have saved all of your work close all of your window so that you are looking at the desktop. Click on the temp folder until you see the "mywebquest" folder. Now click on My Computer and drag the 'mywebquest" folder to the F drive. You have now saved your work to the network. Now, you may delete the copy of your work from the desktop.
