Monday - One group that was persecuted for their religious beliefs was the Mormons. Read about The Persecution of the Mormons. As you read the document, answer the following questions:  Submit  your response to me through Safe Assign by 7:00 am on Tuesday. (15E-20) History Social Science Standards 11.3.3

  1. What were some of the problems Mormons encountered in the 19th century? Why do you think they encountered these problems?
  2. What is a theocracy? In what ways did the Mormons establish theocracies in Nauvoo and the Territory of Utah? 
  3. Do you think theocracies are a good or bad idea for the United States? Why?
  4. Do you think Congress was right to outlaw polygamy in the Utah territory, or, do you think this was a violation of freedom of religion under the First Amendment? Explain.

Tuesday- Choose one religious group, other than the Mormons, we have studied during this unit and write a one page summary of their history and experience in America. Submit your responses as a hard copy in class on Lab Day.(20) Study for Unit 3 test . (Test will be brief: study lecture notes from last week, online readings on separation of church and state, free exercise clause and establishment clause, persecution of Mormons, and your assignment from today. You may use any of your own notes on the test.)

Friday- Listen to the Spanish-American War  lecture.  Using CD's from the lecture, answer the following questions in two separate paragraphs. Submit your responses to me through Safe Assign by 7:00 am on Tuesday. (16E-15) History Social Science Standard 11.4.2

1- How did events in Cuba lead to the Spanish-American War? Be sure to describe at least 2 specific events.

2- Why is the Spanish-American War considered to be a war of imperialism for the United States?
