Tuesday - Read the following account of immigration at the turn of the century. History Social Science Standard 11.2.2
After reading the article, choose one person pictured in the site and pretend that you are that person. If they don't have a name, you may make up a name. Complete the following immigration application which is based on criteria set up by the US department of immigration. You must complete the immigration application as if you were that person and you may make up the information about that person based on what you have learned about immigrants during this time period. Be sure to answer the questions carefully. You do not want to be rejected by the United States Immigration Officials. For information not found in the article, be creative and answer as if you were arriving in America during the early 1900's. I am not grading you on if you have exact facts about specific people, I am looking to see if you can create original yet authentic answers from what you have learned. You must submit your completed application using Safe Assign* on Learning Point by 7:00 am Lab Day. (5E-20pts)
Read chapter 7, pages 272-293 and answer questions 1-20 on p. 294 Submit your answers to me using Safe Assign* on Learning Point by 7:00 am next Tuesday.(1ET-40pts)
Lab Day- Today we will have an in class lecture on expansion and immigration. If there is time, we may listen to some songs about different immigrant groups.
Homework: Interview someone who has immigrated to the United States. It could be a family member, friend, any age, any year. You may interview them over the phone or in person. Fill out the interview form and hand it in on your Exam day (Thursday Sept. 11th) (A-20)
If you are
absent for Lab Day, here is your make up assignment: Read the lyrics of the
songs
about different immigrant groups.
Your focus will be to analyze the
meaning of the song. For each song, identify which group of people
was targeted by the song and describe how that group was represented in
the song. Was it a song that praised the group? Was it a song that
ridiculed the group? Be sure to provide at least one specific example
from each song to prove your point.
Example: The group that was
the focus of this song is ____________ because of the following references.
________.
This group was praised/ridiculed in the song. The following lyrics
illustrate this _________________.

Friday- Today you are going to visit Ellis Island. You are to answer The Ellis Island Experience questions. Be sure to visit all parts of the exhibit. Submit your answers using Safe Assign* on Learning Point by 7:00 am on Monday. (6E-26)
*Safe Assign instructions: Go to Mrs. Giffin's Learning Point site and find the "Safe Assignments" button on the left. Click on that and it will take you to a list of assignments that are due using Safe Assign. Click on the assignment you are doing and follow the directions. It will ask you to attach your word document with your answers and submit it.
