Tuesday- Now look at the Lab Day assignment. You will be writing an in-class essay based on the person whose life history you read. In order to prepare for the essay, study the following NEW DEAL programs and decide which New Deal programs could have helped your person the most. You must use programs that were NOT mentioned in the life history. You can bring one page of hand written notes with you to class to help you write your essay.

Lab Day-    This is an on demand writing prompt. You will have 50 minutes to write your essay.

 New Deal Essay Instructions

You have studied photographs and read the life history of an American who lived through the Great Depression of the 1930s. You have also learned about the New Deal agencies that were created to help these people.

With this collection of information on the person/family and the New Deal agencies that could help them, it is now your job to pull this information together. You will be writing an essay that is creative, informative, and demonstrates your understanding of the effect of the New Deal on private citizens. Your task is to "conduct" a new interview with your assigned person. Follow the format closely.

  Introduction:

bulletReview the information regarding the person/family. In general terms, discuss their problems, concerns, and crises, based on the reading of the American Life History interview. What was their greatest area of need?

Interview: Using an interview format, provide at least 6 questions and answers that reveal the following:

bullet

Specifically, what experiences and problems occurred to your person/family during the Great Depression? (This should be explained in the first two questions)

bullet

Explain, in detail, how at least two different New Deal agencies could have provided help to your person/family. These agencies must be different from the ones mentioned in the Life History. Be very specific about how those agencies could have helped this particular person/family. Explain to your interviewee how the agency might have aided them and then ask your person why they didn't receive help from an agency.

Conclusion:

bullet In hindsight, how helpful was the New Deal in solving the problems faced by your person/family?

After the essay, we will watch a video called Focus on the 1930's.

You will have your unit exam on Friday. Here is a study guide to help you prepare.

Friday- Today is devoted to taking your exam on the Thirties. It will cover the causes and impact of the Great Depression, as well as the programs and impact of the New Deal.

I will not be checking my e-mail regularly over the break. If you e-mail me, it might take several days for me to respond. Have a great break.
