Course Description:

On line Spanish 7-8 meets once a week.  We use the text Spanish for Mastery 3 as the organizing principle of the class, but our studies are not limited to the text.  The class is designed for Juniors and Seniors who have completed Spanish 5-6 and Honors Spanish 5-6.  In addition to receiving full course credit for a year of Spanish, students will fulfill the Computer Literacy Proficiency requirement for graduation.

Class time will be used to present new material, reinforce learned material, to provide maximum oral practice and conversational opportunities and to take tests and quizzes.  The majority of skill practice and basic memorization activities will be performed outside of class time.  Assignments will be posted weekly to this site as well as to www.learningpoint.org and sent the student's email address.

Students must have access to a computer with internet access and an email account on a regular basis and be proficient in sending and receiving email, and accessing internet web sites.  Additional computer skills will be developed in the class, such as sending attachments, instant messaging and basic copy and paste editing.

Advantages to On line Study:

Of course, the first and foremost advantage to an on line course is that you are not required to attend each day.  Another advantage is that you can work at your own pace and on your own schedule.  Assignments are posted weekly and can be completed at any time before the due dates.  Most on line students also find that rather than having less contact with a teacher, they have more and the contact is more individualized as the teacher and the students can use instant messaging, discussion boards and email as forms of communication.

An often overlooked but very important advantage to an on line course is that it provides an alternative to not taking Spanish at all.  Although it is hard for us teachers to believe, there are some students who are tired of Spanish classes and are considering not taking a fourth year.  On line Spanish provides an additional opportunity for students to continue their studies when they might not have otherwise.  This will help the students tremendously when they enter college as they will not have the "learning loss" that occurs when students doesn't study a language for 14-16 months.

Disadvantages to On line Study:

An on line course requires a student to be a responsible, independent learner.  It is very easy to fall behind if the student does not spend enough time at home to complete assignments.  It is also important that the student attend class regularly.  Even one week's absence can be detrimental.  Students who are earning less than 70% will be required to attend class daily until their scores improve.

Course Curriculum:

The class is designed to review and enhance major grammatical structures in order to polish students' speaking and writing skills and to expand vocabulary and conversational skills.  Students will review most of the key elements studied during the first three years, including subjunctive tenses, reflexives, preterit and imperfect usage, command formations, object pronouns,  and perfect tenses.  They will also continue their study of important cultural elements such as food, governments, education, travel and social activities and current events.  Special emphasis is placed on developing culturally appropriate social and conversational skills and the ability to communicate effectively in a variety of situations.  Key structures will have power point presentations associated with them that the students may access at any time for review and reinforcement.

Course Assignments:

Assignments will be posted weekly to several locations so that students have easy access to them.  Weekly assignments will include vocabulary and grammar practice as well as cultural components linked to the lesson's theme. These assignments will be a careful balance of internet based activities, traditional worksheet and textbook exercises.  A significant component of the course is a student's participation in our class' weekly Discussion Board.  Each week the students will be asked to respond to a "topic of the week" as well as to other students' postings.  These discussions take place on www.Learningpoint.org as this is a secure and restricted environment. Students will also be responsible for gathering information on current events.   To see actual assignments, please click on TAREA and choose a week to review.
