Week 9

Cells, continued...

NOTE:  CELL TEST will be WEDNESDAY 10-22-08

Recall that the cell unit consists of three main parts:
1.  The Cell:  structure and function
2.  Moving substances (Cell Transport):  within the cell, into/out of the cell
3.  Work:  Making ATP at the Cellular level

This week we will work on Part 3. Cellular Work:  Making ATP.

q   Read and Outline (take notes) for text pages 56-64.  This is the last part of the chapter.  You are now responsible for knowing the entire chapter.  Due 10-22

q   Do Lab Book page 19 Fill in the Blank Notes-allUse these notes to help you.  The back of Page 19 may be a little confusing, so use the notes I gave you last Wednesday on Aerobic and Anaerobic Respiration to study for the upcoming test.

q   Do the "Cell Metabolism" puzzle located on pg 25 LB.  Cut out the pieces and place them in the correct order on another sheet of paper.   Use this page to help you.  If you do not understand, please stop any day per. 1 to get extra help. Due 10-22

q  Review  Lab Book P. 18A-Front (Cell Transport and Tonicity) Then do p. 18A-Back Cell CQS.    (For CQS #5.  Use this page to help you.  Due 10-22

)q   Answer these questions about METABOLISMPrint a copy to be turned in Wednesday.  Due 10-22

q   Answer the Week 9 discussion Question on Learningpoint.  Answer the 3 part question, then answer back to at least one other person.

*Last weeks question was an interesting situation.  Most of you chose correctly in not eating the chips and drinking the salt water.  Though, you did not necessarily understand why.  The bottom line was that the salt from the chips and the salt water would set up a HYPERTONIC situation in your body.  A Hypertonic solution is one that has more solutes (salt) and less water.  This type of solution would dehydrate your cells (pull the water out of the cells) and thus dehydrate you even more.  You must have water to live...so by eating the chips and drinking the salt water, you would be shortening the amount of time that you could stay alive...waiting for a rescue.

q   Go to Learningpoint -External Links.  Take the Chapter 3 quiz at the Text publisher's website, (you will have to choose Chapter 3 tutorial quiz)   This is optional to prepare you for the Test

q   Osmosis/ Diffusion Lab is due Wednesday 10-22

Answer these questions when writing your Analysis and Conclusion:

Analysis:  (Molecules you are talking about are, starch, sugar, protein and water).

1  Which molecules passed through the diala-Cell membrane?  How do you know?

Explain your positive and negative controls.

2.  Which molecules did not move through the Cell membrane?  How do you know?

Conclusion

1.  Restate your Hypothesis.  did the results support your Hypothesis?  Why or Why not?

2.  Why did the results turn out this way (discuss the attributes of each molecule.  for example, Starch is a polymer of thousands of glucose molecules and thus a very large molecule ...so it could or could not pass through the membrane).

3.  Does Diala-cell act like a cell membrane?  why or why not explain your answer.

4.  Errors

5.  Changes
