Week 11

Infectious Diseases Continued....

***Please go to the Discussion Board on Learningpoint and complete the Week 11 Discussion.  You will not be doing the Qualities of a Good Website (due to the fact we are doing a PowerPoint presentation).  You will simply be posting your name(s) and the disease of your choice (no repeats please).

The PowerPoint -Infectious Disease Project will be due  Week 13.  Be ready to present on Wednesday November 19th.  Sorry, I said presentations would probably be after Thanksgiving....but Thanksgiving is late this year.  We will start presenting on the 19th hopefully get through all presentations, if not we will finish when we get back from Thanksgiving Holiday.

q   Read Textbook pages 334-343.  Take good reading notes (At least 1 page, due Wednesday).  It would be a good idea to include end-of-section key points and summary points in your notes.

q   Do textbook Review Questions 1-6, Self Quiz 1-7, Critical Thinking #2, 3, 4.  Due Wednesday.

q   Do LB page 29.  For "MORE REVIEW", choose from these answers.  Due Wednesday. To answer Lyme Disease questions, use these websites:

For #1-6  http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/submenus/sub_lyme.htm

For #7:  Change the question to:  How is this vaccine atypical? http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/1999/399_lyme.html

q   Do LB page 37 (back only).  Skip Question #21- Due Wednesday

q     Chapter 16 Quiz will be given beginning of class Wednesday.     To study for this, you may want to take the Textbook Publisher's Chapter 16 Quiz found on Learningpoint. (This is optional)

q   Video:  The Flu.  Watch  this video in Learningpoint under Videos.  You'll need QuickTime. While you are watching the video, answer the questions found under Video Questions in Learningpoint.  Due Wednesday.  I expect you to do this assignment in the Library if it doesn't work at home.

**Since the PowerPoint is due in a couple of weeks...Skip the below Assignment

q   Do the following assignment, Food Safety and Bacteria, due Wednesday:

Food Safety and Bacteria  Due Wednesday.  Do not wait until the last minute to do this assignment!

q        Surf to the USDA’s website article on Ground Beef Testing: http://www.fsis.usda.gov/science/Ground_Beef_E.Coli_Testing_Results/index.asp

q       Read the article and look at the data presented in the Tables 1994-2004 (link called "summary data" near the top of the page).

q      Make a spreadsheet, graphs, and answer the following questions:

A.     Using Excel, make a spreadsheet including:

q    Years 1995 - 2004--we're not including 1994 (Column A)

q    Total number of samples analyzed each year-see bottom of each grouping of data (Column B)

q    Total number of positive samples (Column C)

q    Percent positive samples (column D).  Write a formula...  (Hint =C2/B2*100) then drag the formula down through the column.  If you do not know how to use a formula, you could calculate by hand.  (# Positive Divided by the total # of samples multiplied by 100 = Percent Positive Samples).

B.     Make two XY scatter graphs with smooth lines and data points.
1.  Data totals (both number of samples and number of positive samples) vs. years (this graph will have two lines).  Highlight all of your entries in columns A, B, C then click chart wizard.
2.  Percent of positive samples vs. years. Highlight entries in column A and column D (remember the control key).

C.  Answer these questions:

1.      Analyze the data: What are the trends shown in the graphs?

2.      Is the increase in number of positive samples due to the increase of total number of samples analyzed?  Or do you think there is an increase of toxic E. coli in ground beef?

3.      Why is looking at percent positive samples important?
