Midterm Review

 q Urinalysis Lab is due today 4-16-08.  Make sure you answer ALL questions on the back of page 66.  Many numbers have more than one question to answer....so please make sure you answer all part of the question if you want to earn full credit. 

***Results of the Urinalysis Lab LB p 63 - 66.  Data tables:  For Data Table 2, Patient 1 tested positive for sugar.  For Data Table 3, we must have had some cross-contamination...  Patient 2 should have been the only patient to test positive for protein. For Data Table 4, (We did not have time to do this part...but here are the results) Patient 1 tested positive for crystals, Patient 2 for red blood cell casts, and Patient 3 white blood cell casts.  Everything else is negative.  Make sure you answer ALL questions on the back of page 66.  Many numbers have more than one question to answer.

     1.  What are the steps in diagnosing disease?
     2.  What diseases can be indicated by urine color?  Give an example.
     3.  What diseases can be indicated by urine odor?  Give an example.
     4.  What diseases can be indicated by urine pH and specific gravity?  Give an example.
     5.  What diseases can be indicated by urine microscopic observations?  Give an example.
     6.  How can pregnancy be determined by a urine test?
     7.  Can urinalysis quantify amount of drugs in the system?
     8.  What diseases can be indicated by cells in the urine?  Give an example.
     9.  What are the signs of diabetes mellitus? 
    10.  What are the signs of kidney malfunction?
    11. What are the signs of renal parenchymal disease (glomerulonephritis)?

q MIDTERM TEST:  Circulatory, Respiratory and Excretory Systems  4-16-08.  This week will be dedicated to preparing for this Test.  Study all notes, worksheets and Diagrams.  Diagrams on the test will include: Heart, Respiratory System, Excretory System, and Nephron.  If you have not collected all of your work, please stop by J-8 and pick up all papers pertaining to this test.

Note:  Circulatory #13, Respiratory #8 and Excretory #13 -you will not need to answer on paper...these questions are referring to the diagrams that you will need to know for the test.

Circulatory, Respiratory, Excretory Systems Study Guide: 

Circulatory System:

  1. Name the components of the blood (both liquid and cells)

 

  1. What is the function of the RBC’s?  What important protein allows the blood to carry oxygen?

 

  1. What is the function of the WBC’s?

 

  1. Name the blood vessels and their function.

 

  1. What are stem cells?

 

  1. Name the 4 blood types.

 

  1. What blood type is considered the universal donor?  Universal recipient?

 

  1. If you are blood type A, what markers are on your cells?  What antibodies are found in your body?

 

  1. What is Rh disease?  Describe a situation in which a baby and mother are not compatible.

 

  1. Know the difference between pulmonary circulation and systemic circulation.

 

  1. Describe the SA node and its function.  Do the same for the AV node.

 

  1. Where is blood pressure the greatest?  Where is it the lowest?   Where does the actual exchange of gases, wastes and nutrients take place?

 

  1.  Be able to label the heart and know the flow of blood thru the heart starting with the Superior Vena Cava and ending with the Inferior Vena Cava. 

 

Respiratory System:

  1. Give the sequence of the flow of air through the respiratory system.  Start at the nasal cavity and end at the alveoli.  For each structure give the function.

 

  1. Which vertebrate body system is most closely associated functionally with respiration?

 

  1. The movement of oxygen and carbon dioxide is accomplished by simple diffusion.  Be able to explain this statement.

 

  1. Give 3 sources of Carbon Monoxide.  Why is it so deadly to humans?

 

  1. Describe inhalation and exhalation in terms of pressure and movement of diaphragm.

 

  1. Define these terms:  Tidal Volume, Vital Capacity

 

  1. What are some of the diseases caused by smoking?

 

  1. Be able to label the Respiratory system.  Know the route that air takes as it flows through the Respiratory system. 

 

Excretory System:

  1. Name 3 ways that water can be lost by the body.

 

  1. Name 3 ways that water can be gained by the body.

 

  1. The most toxic substances found in the blood are metabolites of ….(choose one)

 

    1. Lipids?      Carbohydrates?      Proteins?   Vitamins?

 

  1. What is the functional Unit of the Kidney?

 

  1. Be able to label the Excretory System:  Kidneys, Ureters, Urinary Bladder, Urethra.

 

  1. Where does filtration occur in the mammalian nephron?

 

  1. Which substances are filtered from the blood stream?  Which substances are not filtered from the blood stream?

 

  1. Which substances are reabsorbed? 

 

  1. What is Dialysis?

 

  1. What is Alcohol and Caffeine?  How do they affect ADH?

 

  1. What is the function of ADH?

 

  1. Know which of these substances are; reabsorbed, excreted or some reabsorbed, some excreted:   water, salt, amino acids, glucose, and urea.
