WEEK 2:   ASSIGNMENTS

q   Read "The Crime Lab" (Back of page E through F and G in your red lab book). Answer questions 1-18  Due Wed. 9-3-08

q   I Wonder Lab- The full write-up is due Wednesday 9-3-08             Make sure that you include:

          * Data Charts 

          *Graph (Title and Labels)  

          * Analysis -Discuss your data 

          * Conclusion- Restate your Purpose, Restate your Hypothesis, was it correct?  Why do you think you got these results? Explain. State Errors and Changes.  (This should be at least a half page long)

Forensic Science Webquest Part 1 only
Answer questions 1-10, print a copy to hand in Wednesday. Respond to the Week 2 discussion board prompt (Checked Wednesday 7:30 AM)  

q   We will be doing the  Blood Stain Analysis Webquest (page C of your red lab book) on Wednesday 9-3-08.  The page should be in your lab book, if not here is a copy:   Blood Stain Webquest.        We will complete the webquest in class.

q Print out, label and write the function of these microscope parts on this page. Use the following link as a resource:
Compound Microscope Parts.  This will be handed in on Lab Day.

q  Discussion Board Describe another way that forensic science fits in with biology or another science.  Don’t use the examples that people before you have used! (Checked Wednesday)

q Lab Book:  PLEASE BRING $6.50.

1.      Go to internet Explorer

2.    Go to the following Website:

3.    Choose “The Scene” from the topics given on the left screen.

4.    Answer the following questions:

a.     Give 4 important steps an investigator should take when arriving at a crime scene

5.    Now click on “Evidence” then “Every Criminal Leaves a Trace”.

a.     What did Edmond Locard say?

b.    What is Trace Evidence?  Give 2 examples.

6.    Click on “Evidence” again, then Bloodstain Analysis.

a.     How do investigators find bloodstains?  Give 2 reagents that are used.

b.    How are blood patterns used?

c.     What does the shape of a bloodstain reveal?  Give a 2 examples.

d.    What does the origin of a bloodstain tell an investigator?  How has the analysis of this evidence changed?

e.     What do blood splatter marks tell the investigator?

f.     What do spaced blood patterns tell the investigator?

7.    Go to the following website:

a.     What percentage of the total body weight is blood?

b.    Name 3 categories of bloodstains

c.     Describe Passive, Transfer and Projected blood stain

d.    Directionality of a bloodstain is important.  What does an elongated bloodstain tell the investigator? Give an example by drawing a picture.

a.     Click on Computer imaging and enhancement

b.    Click on “Luminol photographs” and look at the pictures.
