Monday September 1st- Friday September 5th I will not be here on this lab day, something that rarely ever happens in the online class. The sub will still give you a test on Beowulf. The remainder of class, please read The Wanderer and the Seafarer and continue with the assignments for next week. You can also email me at tjcalver@yahoo.com for questions. I should be able to get back to you as I'm in England. Due THIS lab day: Completed reading of Beowulf. We will at first have a discussion in a Socratic Seminar style form at in which you MUST participate. There is also a TYPED response due regarding Paganism versus Christianity. In-Class: Discussion of "Beowulf", followed by a test on Beowulf. We will look at various Anglo-Saxon stories such as "The Wanderer", pages 53-56 in your textbook. We will also look at "The Seafarer" and discuss how it fits into the on goings of Anglo-Saxon history. Assignments: Read "The Wanderer" and "The Seafarer". The Seafarer we should go over in class, so skim over it to check for understanding, The Wanderer we'll hopefully have time to discuss in class. If we cover both stories, you only need review the notes given. TYPE up a one-page response that explains the origination of Hadrian's Wall. Use encyclopedia's, the Web, etc., to research why this wall was built, who devised it, created it, and where it still stands to day. Bring this with you next lab day. Use a Yahoo! or Google search to find details and then paraphrase the information. Do NOT simply copy and paste it! Read p. 58-62 in your text book regarding Bede and the English language. Answer questions 1-7 in the book. Bring this with you by next lab day in a PRINTED format. Study these 10 latin prefixes/suffixes/roots and be prepared for a quiz in class:

At one time, the front cover had been used as a cutting board and beer mat; leaves are missing and fourteen pages at the back have been burnt. Written in a single hand, it is one of four manuscripts, dating from the second half of the tenth century, that preserve virtually all the poetry in Old English that has survived, including such important elegiac poems as The Seafarer, Deor, The Wanderer, The Wife's Lament, and Widsith. |
Beowulf notes
Written around 700 A.D.
Epic poem, a long, heroic poem.
The Anglo-Saxons looked up to bravery and having heroic qualities.
The story takes place in Denmark, it involves King Hrothgar having a
dilemma with a monster that has
been
attacking his mead-hall called Herot.
Grendel, a swamp-monster from below, described as being powerful and
vicious, has been killing King Hrothgars men.
Grendel is described as being spawned from Cain, responsible for
Abels death. (Christianity), and forever must
be
doomed to live down below (fate). Belief of both fate and Christianity based
in the reading.
Herot is abandoned for 12 years, King Hrothgar is unhappy about
abandoning his mead-hall.
Grendel protects Herot against the men coming inside.
The Danes hide from Grendel; word gets out that a monster has taken
over Denmark. The Danes appear defeated.
Beowulf overhears the Danish dilemma; he goes to Denmark out of a
sense of duty.
The Watchman is the first to meet him, at first suspicious of a raid, then overjoyed to hear that Beowulf will help them
Many men were called under their fathers name during Anglo-Saxon
times, for example, Hrothgar is also known as Healfdanes son, as Healfdane was his father.
Higlac is Beowulfs uncle, king of the Geats.
Geatland is now Sweden.
Edgetho is Beowulfs father.
Only fire is able to destroy Herot.
Beowulfs men are unable to help him as Grendels skin armored.
Beowulf manages to kill Grendel with his bare hands.
Beowulf rips off Grendels shoulder, etc., and hangs it in the mead
hall.
| What does "The Wanderer" look
like in Old English? Can you make any sense out of it?
