Monday November 17th-Friday November 21st

Due THIS lab day: Paragraphs 1, 2 and 3 of your Hamlet paper. (Intro, ST 1, ST 2). These should be complete paragrpahs, not an outline.

In-Class:  Extra-credit presentations.

We will also engage in some peer editing of your Hamlet paper so far. This will be a last chance to truly understand the formatting of a college-level paper, so be prepared to ask questions/ give advice to others.

Assignments:

Read p. 343-354 in your Prentice Hall book regarding the history of the seventeenth century. There will be a test on this information next lab day.

In class you will be assigned a seventeenth century poem to read, recite and teach to the class. Please practice this poem with your partner and make a professional Power Point presentation explaining every facet of info about the poem to the class.  This is a partner-project that requires serious time and effort. This assignment is worth 50 points and involves doing the following:

  1. Read the poem clearly and precisely to the class. This should be done using proper articulation and sound as if you have practiced reading it several times. Don't stumble on words, practice!

  2. Discuss what the poem is implying. Summarize the poem, explain who the poet is addressing, emotions involved, protests, etc., and what makes the poem stand out.

  3. What is the rhyming scheme of the poem? What types of literary devices such as alliteration, metaphors, etc., are used?

  4. What type of poet is the writer? Puritan? Metaphysical? Cavalier? Be sure you not only know, but can also define the type of poet each person is.

  5. Research the poem to find out as much information as you can as to why it was written, what it is saying about the poet who wrote it, where it stands in history and any other important information that distinguish this poem as a classical piece of literature.

  6. When you are called, be prepared to clearly TEACH your poem to the class. Hint: use Power Point to write down key terms so the class can write notes on what you have said and be prepared to eventually take a test on these poems. If you do not teach the poem well, the class may be confused and not be able to perform as well on a test as they should, so it is your duty to fully inform them on all details on the poem you are teaching. If you feel more comfortable using Power Point to present, please feel free to do so.

Below is the list of poems that will be included. You and your partner will select a poem via the "lucky dip" method. It is then up to you if you'd like to trade poems, or even select a poem to do by yourself.

This is the main formal paper you will write this year and it's worth a lot of points, so do this well.

Once complete, put the entire paper together, print out a FINALIZED copy and bring it with you on Wednesday December  3rd. Your final version will be due on this date. Late copies lose 25% immediately regardless of any situation whatsoever.  In other words, make sure your paper is with you on the lab day of December 3rd at the beginning of class and PRINTED out. Do not wait until Tuesday night or Wednesday morning to finish/ print your paper! For any questions, stop in and talk to me. Thank you!
