What will we study?
Go to Lessons.
This page is constructed for a weekly lesson plan. Next to each week, you
will find the subject of study or unit being studied.
Expectations for Learners:
This course focuses on American Literature from the
20th Century. We will be using this literature to learn about ourselves and our
world. In order to do this, our learning will be focusing on four
significant components: writing, reading, speaking, and listening.
Of course, because this course occurs predominantly online, you have decided to
challenge yourself in a new way to ensure that your learning is
successful. I'm looking forward to facing this challenge with you.
The Poway Unified School District (PUSD) has aligned
its standards with the state: "The idea behind Standards is to set clear
expectations for what we want students to know and be able to do." (AFT
1999)
To focus your learning, go to Grade
Level Standards for Grade 11.
Attendance Policy:
- Online Attendance Policy: This attendance
policy is different from that in your regular classes.
Please read the following policy, print out, and ask your parent to
read and sign the policy.
- For the most part, we will meet weekly, on
lab days. Because we meet only once each week, it is very important
that you do not miss class when we do meet. Please arrange
doctors' appointments at times when the class does not meet.
- On occasion, there will be assignments that necessitate us
meeting on other
days. However, because of the infrequency with which we meet, it is very
important that you attend class when we meet. This means that we will
inform you of the changes in a week's schedule and you will adjust your
schedule to meet the needs of the class.
- There will always be a quiz or test on lab day, and you have only one week to
make up that missing work.
-
If you are tardy to class on lab day, you will automatically receive a detention.
- If your grade drops below a C and there is a
consistent drop in assignment completion, you will lose your off-campus pass
and will attend class daily.
Assignment Policy:
- Each assignment has a due date and a due time. There is no excuse for not having
your work in on time.
-
Assignments will be posted one to two weeks in advance, so check the web site
frequently so that you don't find yourself in a predicament if the server goes
down. Don't forget to set your browser to save pages for 14 days-that will
eliminate problems if the server does go down.
-
All major writing assignments and projects will be due in hard copy. If you are
absent on a lab day when one of these assignments are due, send your work in
with a reliable friend or guardian, or e-mail me the work by the start of class
and bring in a hard copy the next day you attend school. If you have an
emergency, e-mail me or leave a message on my voicemail so that I can help to
accommodate your situation.
Grading Policy:
- Grades are determined based on the following
categories:
-
A=On-line or
In-class assignments (60%)
-
E=Exams, Quizzes,
On-Demand Writings (10%)
-
P=Preparation,
Organization, and Attendance (5%)
-
CCA=Common Course
Assessment (15 %)
-
Your grades will be posted in the classroom approximately every six weeks and
online approximately each three weeks. You can access your grades on the Course
Information page at www.learningpoint.org.
- The following grading scale will be used:
100-90% A
89-80% B
79-70% C
69-0% F
You must complete all major assignments to pass this course. If you earn a
rewrite (R) on an essay, you must rewrite the paper up to C quality. The grade
remains a zero in the grade book until this happens, and your grade in the
course remains an F until you complete the assignment to C-standard.
Tutorial:
- I will be available to help you in T-20 on Tuesdays during 5th period,
Wednesdays and Thursdays during tutorial, and by appointment. I check my e-mail
regularly, so you can always e-mail me with a question, as well.
- I know this year will be challenging, but fun. I expect
that each student is willing to accept this challenge.
