Welcome to the first edition of the
PUSD e-bulletin
Through this publication, Poway Unified will regularly  update news and information about the school district. Sections of our website will be highlighted as well as other sites that provide a further understanding of education in California. Parents will also receive a PUSD e-bulletin notice in case of a school emergency. A letter from the school will still be sent home, but email is a more immediate way of communicating in times of an emergency.

This is a new and exciting way of communicating with you. If you have comments or suggestions for the PUSD e-bulletin, please contact Sharon Raffer, Director of Communications, at ebulletin@powayusd.com.

Dear Parents, community members, and staff,

We are pleased to send you our first PUSD e-bulletin. The e-bulletin provides timely communication with our school community in a cost-effective manner.

On August 25, students returned for the new school year, with the exception of students at Abraxas High School and some students at Valley Elementary School who began school in mid-July.  They were welcomed by our dedicated teachers and supportive staff, who are making every effort to ensure that all our students have a special year.

If every child in PUSD attends school for just one more day during the year, funding to the district would increase by $1 million. Superintendent Don Phillips is urging parents to plan vacations during non-school days only; to schedule medical and dental appointments for their children at the end of the school day; and to make sure children go to school every day unless they are ill. The school district’s holiday schedule contains a week of vacation in November and another week in February, along with the December winter recess. This schedule should help parents plan vacations during non-school days.

Save the date!
PUSD’s three district Teachers of the Year will be recognized at the annual “A Salute to Teachers” event at the Civic Theater in San Diego at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 4. The event will be televised, or tickets can be purchased from the San Diego County Office of Education for $14. Call 858-292-3850. PUSD will be represented by Laura D’Acquisto, Los Penasquitos Elementary School, Kenneth Faverty, Poway High School, and Barbara Hensley, Mesa Verde Middle School. We are very proud of these representatives of all our teachers.

The Poway Unified School District
website is filled with materials of interest to parents and the community. Visiting an individual school site will give you a glimpse into the school itself. You are sure to notice each school site’s presentation is unique and informative!

It took one student and a youth program that fosters trust to develop a program that has brought the value of respecting others to everyone’s attention at Abraxas High School and in the Poway community.  T-shirts worn by students and staff say ‘please’ on the front and ‘thank you – the only way to go’ on the back.

The power of these words has made a difference to the atmosphere at Abraxas and has caused meaningful conversations in the community. The shirts were the idea of Chris Kenny, a 17-year-old senior who worked with the Coyote Youth Program to make it happen. The city of Poway presented the school with a proclamation on August 22.

Preparing students to be successful in college and in the business world begins with pre-preschool and extends throughout one’s lifetime. The links below access websites that give not only college information, but tips for parents of elementary students as well.

PUSD has more than 32,000 students who are attending 31 schools in the cities of Poway and San Diego. The school district also has alternative programs for students and an extensive Adult Education program.  To see a complete list of our school sites...

The federal government has begun implementing No Child Left Behind (NCLB) by holding states accountable for developing plans and reporting progress toward meeting the requirements of NCLB.  The overall goal of the No Child Left Behind Act is to have all students – 100 percent – achieving at grade level by 2014.

In our efforts to communicate quickly with our community, we are asking others to subscribe to this e-bulletin, and if you want notice of the bulletin at your place of business, please subscribe for that second email address.  If you received this bulletin, you are already subscribed.   In case of emergency, this form of communication could be invaluable.

Join the Community and PUSD at the kick-off event for "Character Counts" on Tuesday, October 7th at 7pm at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts.  The guest speaker will be Michael Josephson.  A commentator for CBS's KNX News Radio, he conducts more than 50 programs per year for leaders in education, business, government and the non-profit community.

The Building for Success Program, authorized under the passage of Proposition U, includes modernization and expansion of 16 elementary schools, four middle schools, three high schools, and one continuation high school in the Poway Unified School District. Some of the key aspects of the program are to optimize state school facilities program funds, minimize learning disruption, and maintain safety and quality standards.
