1
Why Develop Character at School?
  • School based character education is a way to reinforce what parents are doing at home and to create a learning environment that makes it possible for teachers to teach and students to learn.
2
What is Character Counts!
  • CC! is a national grassroots initiative
  • CC! is the nation’s most widely used character development framework
  • CC! is used in schools, youth sports, and civic organizations
  • It is based on shared beliefs and consensus values called the “Six Pillars of Character”
3
“Six Pillars of Character”
  • Trustworthiness-integrity, honesty, promise- keeping, loyalty
  • Respect-courtesy, autonomy, dignity, diversity, Golden Rule
  • Responsibility-duty, accountability, pursuit of excellence
  • Fairness-Openness, consistency, impartiality
  • Caring- kindness, compassion, empathy
  • Citizenship- lawfulness, common good, environment
4
Major Tenets of CC!
  • The “Six Pillars” are not a curriculum but a strategic framework for teaching and evaluating character development.
  • Advocacy of the “Six Pillars” as common vocabulary is designed to consolidate rather than fragment.
  • CC! in schools should not be treated as an add-on that will divert attention from basic academic goals, but as  means of enhancing the school’s ability to focus on their academic goals.

5
What does CC! Look Like at School
  • Successful CC! based programs come in of all forms including:
      • use of literature, drama, art, and music
      • story-telling
