Greg Mizel
Recommended to Board of Education
as Del Norte High School Principal

PUSD ‘s fifth comprehensive high school is scheduled to open in 2009

The Poway Unified School District is proud to announce the selection of Greg Mizel as principal of Del Norte High School. The selection will be recommended to the Poway Unified School District Board of Education for approval at its meeting on March 10, 2008.

PUSD Superintendent Don Phillips said, “Greg Mizel has demonstrated his commitment to provide the best possible educational experience for students. We were looking for a leader who would bring the Del Norte community together and develop a rigorous educational program to prepare our students for the 21st century.” Superintendent Phillips added, “Greg is a strong leader who is excited about the opportunity to lead our fifth comprehensive high school.”

Mr. Mizel is presently serving as principal of Mesa Verde Middle School, a position he has held since 2004. Under Mr. Mizel’s leadership, Mesa Verde Middle School became one of only four middle schools in San Diego County to achieve an API of 900 or greater. Mesa Verde Middle School also was featured in the September 2007 Top Schools issue of San Diego Magazine.

Mr. Mizel came to Poway Unified from the Rancho Santa Fe School District where he served as principal of the Rancho Santa Fe upper elementary and middle school, grades 5–8. Previous to that he was an as assistant principal for grades K-8. Mr. Mizel taught middle school English, writing, and speech and served as English Department Chair for grades K-8 from 1992-2001. During his educational career he coached hundreds of students in public speaking and was the head coach of the Rancho Santa Fe Wrestling Team. He is presently an adjunct professor in the Education Department of National University.

Mr. Mizel earned a Master of Science in Education degree with an emphasis in Educational Leadership from National University and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Christian Heritage College.

Together we will develop a respectful and engaging environment where there is a personalized approach to education and a challenging rigorous curriculum, giving our students every opportunity to be college ready and prepared for success in post-secondary education and in the world of tomorrow.”
