On March 27, the California Department of Education released the results of the 2005-2006 State and Similar School Rankings for all public schools.  Poway Unified maintained high levels of performance, led by gains at the elementary level that included four schools achieving 10/10 state and similar school rankings.  Overall, the District’s Academic Performance Index (API) of 858 is the highest of San Diego County’s unified school districts.

On the state rankings, elementary schools inched upward from an average of 9.45 on a ten point scale to 9.5 in 2006.  Among the District’s secondary schools, one high school improved one rank.  Overall, the middle schools achieved an average state rank of 9.67 and the high schools averaged 9.75 on the state’s ten point scale.  The twenty PUSD schools receiving a state rank of “10” thereby earning a place among the state’s to 10% include:  Adobe Bluffs, Canyon View, Chaparral, Creekside, Deer Canyon, Highland Ranch, Los Peñasquitos, Painted Rock, Park Village, Rolling Hills, Shoal Creek, Sundance, Tierra Bonita, and Turtleback elementary schools, Bernardo Heights, Mesa Verde, Oak Valley, and Twin Peaks middle schools, and Poway, Rancho Bernardo, and Westview high schools.

Four schools earning Similar School Ranks of “10” include: Deer Canyon, Los Peñasquitos, Rolling Hills, and Sundance Twenty out of 32 schools received Similar School Rankings of 7 or higher.

In 2006, the number of 10/10 schools improved from one to four.  Earning the coveted 10/10 rankings in 2006 were: Deer Canyon, Los Peñasquitos, Rolling Hills, and Sundance.  Since 1999, Los Peñasquitos Elementary has achieved 10/10 status three times, doing so in 2002, 2004, and 2006.

 “We continue to excel with our API scores, and we continue to see gains in our similar school ranks. These outstanding results are a tribute to the students, parents, and staff of PUSD,” said Don Phillips, PUSD Superintendent.
