The Mentos and Diet Coke Phenomenon

HISTORY
Steve Spangler is credited with bringing attention to this incredible science experiment that has been on the internet since September 2005. This phenomenon has spawned numerous exploding soda experiments on video sites like YouTube.com and Google Video.
Since then websites like, Eepybird.com made this experiment even more popular by video taping two men re-creating the famous Bellagio Hotel Fountain in Las Vegas, Nevada using just Diet Coke and Mentos.
"FIZZ"ICAL SCIENCE
This project first started
out as just a science experiment for our Matter Unit. As we (the class and
I) began talking about all the supplies and necessary requirements needed to
pull off the experiment, it dawned on us all that it would be great to be
able teach other students how to do the same experiment for themselves. It
just snowballed from there. Our class went to work researching on this
phenomenon using the internet.
The largest challenge in producing a project like this is being able to
engage all students in the digital learning process. Teaching them the
proper technique and how to convey their message in a clear and systematic
way was another challenging aspect of our project.
This experience was wonderful for all of us. To be able to work together
with a rough concept, find a strategy that would work and implementing it
was a very valuable learning tool.
WOW! We have been nominated for an iVIE (Innovative Video in Education)
Award in the category Grades 3-5 Math/Science.
