Poway and Mt.
Carmel High Schools are the first and largest schools to undergo
various renovations, modernizations, and additions because of
Proposition U funding.
The work is being accomplished in three phases, with approximate
final completion in Fall 2007. These phases are structured to
ensure that priority work listed in the Proposition U list of
facility improvements is accomplished first. The softball
field work in Phase I is complete and was the preparatory work
for Phase II construction of the new 80,000 sq.ft. two-story
classroom addition to replace existing re-locatable classrooms.
Poway High School was built in 1962 and has a current enrollment of
2944 students. The principal is Scott Fisher. The school features a
performing arts center, media center, band, choir, and theatre
rooms, and a wrestling center.
Projects at Poway include:
- Utility upgrade/efficiency improvements
- Renovate/upgrade restrooms as needed
- Expand/renovate music/drama spaces
- Expand/renovate library
- Renovate/expand staff work area
- Modernize classrooms, such as lighting, power/data, flooring,
marker boards
- Add two-story classroom building to replace aging portables
and relieve community impact by expanding parking
- Add/renovate science classrooms
- ADA upgrades/compliance
- Expand/renovate food service/lunch shelter
- Site/grounds improvements for safety compliance
- Add/upgrade furniture and instructional equipment
- Upgrade/replace communications and fire alarm systems

The initial phase of work on the Poway High School was site
improvements which included construction of the Varsity Softball
Field and upgrades to the JV Baseball Field. This work
was necessary to provide a site for field sports when the upper field
near Titan Way is used as a construction staging site to support the
new two-story building additions
