Security Audit

There were no great surprises in the security audit performed by Farm9.  This company tests application access, as well as overall network security.  Their suggestions have already been evaluated by ISS and Technology Support Services (TSS) staff and changes made.

One of their recommendations was a "clear understanding by the staff" of the importance of protecting passwords.  This is important!  Teachers, administrators, and support staff must protect and not share passwords with each other or students.  The amount of confidential data on the networks has increased ten-fold in the last five years.  This data is only as secure as each user chooses to make it.  Without your help, we can never have the security needed for a user population as large as Poway Unified.

To this date, there are about 28,000 users (students, administrators, and teachers) with passwords.  With the adoption of No Child Left Behind (NCLB), every parent/caregiver will need to login and view appropriate information about their student.  This will increase our users to possibly 100,000.  To manage and authenticate these will be a major job for the technology departments.  Please help us by protecting your password.

Users will notice changes over the year to Proliant and  server PUSD data, per the Farm9 recommendation.  If you have any problems during this period, we in ISS are ready and willing to help in every way we can.

Thank you for your support in this endeavor.
