PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

In addition to the academic learning that takes place at Westview, we want our students to develop life skills that will help them feel comfortable in any situation. One of those skills is selecting appropriate attire for various settings. For example, students need to know the suitable thing to wear for the beach, a job interview, a funeral, and a formal dinner…and that the same outfit will not work for all four events!

The weather has been warming up, and now is a good time to review appropriate attire for school events with your students. We want school and school functions to be a positive experience for all of our Wolverines, and it’s no fun for anyone when we have to send someone home to change clothes because of a poor choice. Some quick reminders:

PROM:
As you shop for prom attire, please remember that school dress code will be strictly enforced at the door. Students need to fully cover the “Three Bs” (breasts, buttocks, and bellies). Extreme cutouts are not acceptable. If you have any doubts about a dress, please err on side of caution. Prom is a very special night, and it is always a shame when we have to send someone home to change clothes.

SCHOOL:
We are starting to see some dress code violations such as “short shorts,” tube tops, and T-shirts with playboy or beer logos.  We are reprinting the Westview Expectations for Apparel in this issue.  Please review these guidelines with your student.

VOLUNTEERS HONORED AT LUNCHEON

2007 Award Recipients: Cheryl White, Carolyn Epple, Colleen Salzetti, Beth Sczempka, & Gail Durso

Volunteers at Westview were greeted by staff members wearing grass skirts, entertained by wonderfully talented students from our Choral Department, and served delicious Hawaiian food at this year’s Volunteer Luncheon.

At the luncheon The PTSA Honorary Service Award winners were announced.

Gail Durso, PTSA College Readiness Chair and Laura Peterson, Color Guard Booster President both received “Very Special Person Awards”.  Gail was recognized for the long volunteer hours she spends in the Wolverine Center collecting and organizing college resources for our students. She also organized the recent College Readiness Panel Forum and is working with Colleen Salzetti to organize PUSD’s first district-wide College Fair.

Laura Peterson shares her gift of sewing with our Color Guard sewing and designing flags and working to keep the guard program running smoothly. She has also served on the Choral Boosters Board and is an active Volunteer in her church.

Two winners of the Honorary Service Award were announced: Berina Pennington and Beth Sczempka. Berina is an active volunteer with the Color and Winter Guard having held several key positions with the Boosters over the years.  She also served as Foundation Board Treasurer for two years.

Beth Sczempka has shared her passion for art and theater with students at Deer Canyon, Mesa Verde, Mount Carmel and here at Westview. She has served as “Reflections” Chair and served on multiple Grad Night committees. Here at Westview she founded the Theatre Alliance and has been serving drama students for the past five years as part of that organization.

We had two volunteers awarded Continuing Service Awards: Carolyn Epple, PTSA President and Cheryl White, AP Honors Program.  Carolyn Epple has been working on behalf of children for more than 25 years. She has served as PTA president at Deer Canyon, Mesa Verde, and Palomar Council. Currently, in addition to being outgoing president here at Westview she also holds a position with Ninth District.

Cheryl White has also served with Palomar Council and Ninth District PTA. She has served on Westview’s PTSA Board for the past five years and has also served on the Foundation, School Site Council and WASC Accreditation Leadership team. She is most proud of her involvement with the AP Honors Program, which she founded three years ago to honor students taking those exams.

Lois Mangarelli was the recipient of the “Oooh Rah!” award, given to a staff member who has provided exceptional support to the PTSA and the students here at Westview.

At the luncheon Dawn Kastner announced Westview’s Volunteer of the year, Colleen Salzetti. Colleen has been on the PTSA board since the school opened, has served on the Band Booster Board as well as the Football Booster Board. For the past few years she has organized registration for our students, making sure she has enough volunteers to see that the process goes smoothly. She volunteers regularly in the Wolverine Center and is currently involved with organizing PUSD’s first District Wide College Fair, scheduled for next Fall.

PTSA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

We continue to support our students!

On April 30 and May 1, you saw PTSA volunteers distributing granola bars to the students taking the STAR tests. We felt it was important for them to have "something in their stomachs" to activate their brains! It is very critical that every student participate in standardized testing. PLEASE advocate for this now and in years to come!

Our "Parents Rock for Grad Nite" event was very successful. Close to 200 people attended! Our Silent Auction brought in over $2000! Thank you, Adele Rancourt and her helpers, Beth Byloff, Peg Keating, Widney Hawthorne, and Christine Patrize! Our casino area was hopping! Thank you, Stephanie Hewitt, for coordinating that! Debbie Govea headed up a very successful 50/50 raffle.  In total we made almost $10,000!! Thank you, Dora Gray, for lending us your beautiful home and yard for this event! Congratulations to our committee which also includes Kim McCoy, Patsy Romero, Matt Epple, Laura Wilson, Jennifer Kuhlman, Vickie Ness, Cindi Wade, Yvonne Weinstein, and Cindy Kodama.

Sue Hasselmann, president-elect, and Jennifer Duffy, executive vice president-elect, will be attending the California State PTA convention in Sacramento on May 3-6. They will be attending workshops to prepare them for their offices, general meetings to vote on the next Board of Managers, resolutions and bylaws revisions and hear speakers including Governor Schwarzenegger, California Superintendent of Schools, Jack O'Connell, Dr. Kent Keith and California's Teacher of the Year for 2007, Alan Sitomer. This will be an exciting convention, and we look forward to their reports next month.

On Tuesday, May 29, at 6:30pm in the Theatre, PTSA will host our Second Term Student/Staff Recognition Program. Please join us for this very heart-warming evening. There are so many students who are recognized, not for excellence in academics or athletics, but for just being good kids by helping others and by showing good character.

Grad Nite continues to progress. We thank all of you who have responded to the request for donations. This committee is committed to having a wonderful evening for our graduating seniors!

The Westview Volunteer Luncheon was on April 25, and what a wonderful event the Westview Staff put on!  Hawaiian theme, Hawaiian food -- it was
wonderful! Congratulations to Colleen Salzetti, who was chosen by the Westview staff as Volunteer of the Year! PTSA presented awards also -- look for those in Ina Gibson's article in this newsletter.

On May 30, there will be a Junior Parents Grad Nite Meeting. Plan on being there and learn how you can become involved in this wonderful event in 2008! More information is in this newsletter!

CHARACTER COUNTS!

PILLAR – CITIZENSHIP

The first five pillars of the Character Counts! program adopted by our school district several years ago have been covered in past newsletter articles. These include TRUSTWORTHINESS, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY,  FAIRNESS and CARING. This final article pertains to the sixth pillar – CITIZENSHIP.

Being a good citizen means going beyond our own interests and demonstrating a concern for the needs of others by taking seriously the obligation to make our homes, schools, neighborhoods, communities and country the best they can be. A good citizen does his or her share by cooperating, staying informed, voting responsibly, being a good neighbor, volunteering time and/or money to charitable and social causes, obeying laws and rules, respecting authority, and protecting the environment.

Take some time to discuss good citizenship with your student at home – reinforce the importance of doing your share, playing by the rules, respecting authority, demonstrating civic virtues, and honoring and respecting our country and our flag. Let’s do our best to see that as our Wolverines grow from teens into young adults, they make a positive impact on society and continue to do so throughout their lives.

Be sure and visit www.charactercounts.org for more information regarding the Character Counts! program.

2007 WESTVIEW TRIATHLON IS LOOKING FOR CORPORATE SPONSORS

In January 2007, The Exercise and Nutritional Science Department at Westview was featured on ABC World News for its innovative curriculum and the positive impact it has on teen’s lives.

This year the ENS Department is continuing the tradition of our annual ENS triathlon on June 11th (girls) and June 12th (boys). It will mark the 5th year, and still the only high school to do such an event!

The Triathlon has 2 purposes:

Gives the Westview ENS students an opportunity to participate in a real life - healthy lifestyle event…which originated in San Diego .

Serves as a fundraiser to support and offer new creative ENS elective courses. The ENS Department needs your help!

Corporate sponsors to help offset some of the cost to run the event.

Contact information of potential sponsors for our event.

Some of the ways sponsors are featured are: on the event t-shirt, the event web page, any event publications, and the event bibs.

The sponsors we had last year were: Competitor Magazine, Cliff Bar, Frogs Club One, PowerAde, Soup Plantation, Brilliant Marketing, West Photo Labs, Albertsons, Hollywood Video, Chipotle and members of the Westview Community.

The sponsors listed above donated a wide range of things from food and beverages for our event, prizes for our top race finishers, prizes for our fundraising athletes, money to offset the cost for the event.

Our Westview students and the ENS department will be grateful for any assistance you can offer in finding sponsors for our event. All  donations are tax deductible.

ALL STUDENTS

Course Selections

Students have recently completed the course request selection process for the 2007-2008 school year. Our thanks go to all parents, counselors and students for making the process a smooth one. In the beginning of May, students will be receiving a copy of their courses for the next school year during homeroom to take home for any changes that need to be made.

The master schedule is generated from student course selections. Changing courses after the master schedule has been built becomes very difficult. Please review the list of courses with your student for any changes.

SENIORS

Senior Survey

All seniors should have received the Senior Survey in their Homeroom class. This form is part of the check-out process. We compile information from students such as their plans after high school, scholarships awarded, etc.  This year, we are requesting that Senior Surveys be returned by May 15 in the Wolverine Center. If your senior has received any scholarship offers this year, we will invite the family to our Senior Awards Reception honoring this accomplishment. Extra forms are available in the Wolverine Center or they may be e-mailed by sending a request to Kathy Bloomfield at kbloomfield@powayusd.com.
