PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Newsweek recently devoted a cover article, entitled “Girls Gone Bad,” to the shallowness of today’s young celebrities. I won’t argue with the contention that young people are not being provided with good role models, but I also do not believe that people like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears represent the youth who will lead us into the future.

In the last two weeks I have had the pleasure of attending numerous student performances, academic competitions, and athletic events.  Westview students have produced outstanding efforts in the Science Olympiad (4th place out of 26 teams), “Guys and Dolls” and “the Romance Concert”, and playoff berths in every winter sport! While attending these events, I have been impressed by several things.

First of all, our students benefit from an enormous amount of parent support. Parents not only attend these events to cheer on our students, but they provide background work such as coaching, taking tickets, bringing pizza, making costumes, and much, much more.

Second, our students benefit from outstanding teachers and coaches. The caliber of the performances and skills that I have observed is especially remarkable for a school that has been in existence for such a short period of time.

But the thing that has impressed me the most in the past couple of weeks is the caliber of young people who represent Westview. I am referring both to the participants in these events as well as those who come to cheer them on. Research has shown that students are more successful, both academically and by other measures, when they participate in extra curricular activities. Our students are enthusiastic, bright, and energetic, and they make me optimistic about the future!

PTSA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Parents,

On April 10, Westview will hold its Annual Meeting. At this meeting, you will be electing the officers for the 2007-2008 year. Notification will be given to you 30 days in advance of the results of the nominating committee -- the slate of officers. Our elected officers are President, Executive Vice President, 1st VP - Programs, 2nd VP - Membership, 3rd VP - Volunteers, 4th VP - Ways and Means, 5th VP - Grad Nite, Recording Secretary, Treasurer, Financial Secretary, Auditor and Historian.  If you are interested in serving on the PTSA board, please contact Parliamentarian, Anne Smith, at annemfs@san.rr.com. We are always looking for new leaders! And please join us at our election on April 10 at 7:00pm in the Theater.

Join me in welcoming Cindy Lape as our newest board member. She is the new Student/ASB Representative. And thank you, Millie Domingo, for serving first term! We'll miss you, but look forward to working with Cindy.

Thank you to Cathy Carpenter, our Mock Testing Chair, for conducting the 2nd session of testing on February 3. The final opportunity for your student to take the practice tests is Saturday, March 31. More information will be forthcoming.

Our Grad Nite Committee continues its work on this exciting and fun event for our graduating seniors. There are always opportunities to help!  Please call Cindi Wade at cwade2@san.rr.com for more information or to volunteer.

Westview PTSA continues to support Palomar Council PTA's Adopt-a-Family program. Over 300 families in Poway Unified School District have been identified as in need of food, clothing and monetary donations. The Spring Food Drive began on February 27 and will end on March 25.  Elsewhere in this newsletter is information on needs. Please give generously -- many families struggle to provide meals during school breaks; often the only meals these students have are the free and reduced breakfasts and lunches served at school. For your convenience, a collection box is in Westview's Volunteer Room.

CHARACTER COUNTS!

PILLAR – FAIRNESS

The past few newsletters have contained articles pertaining to the first three pillars of the Character Counts! program which was adopted by our school district several years ago – these being TRUSTWORTHINESS, RESPECT and RESPONSIBILITY. This month’s focus is on the fourth pillar – FAIRNESS.

We hear it often – that “the world isn’t fair” or “life isn’t fair”.  There are plenty of things that seem unfair all across the face of the globe that we cannot control, of course.  But we can still affect the world around us by treating people with equanimity and impartiality, attempting to be as open-minded and reasonable as possible in all situations, doing our best to “play by the rules”, avoiding taking advantage of others, and being considerate of the feelings of everyone who will be affected by our actions and decisions.  Fairness brings to mind the Golden Rule – treat others as you would wish to be treated – fairly!

Join the Westview PTSA and Student Services on campus in promoting character education by talking with your teen at home about fairness - what treating people fairly means and the benefits of being a fair person. Teens are impressionable – so each and every day do your best to demonstrate fairness in your own actions – be those personal or professional.

We encourage you to visit www.charactercounts.org for more information regarding the Character Counts! program.

SURF, SUN & STIX INVITATIONAL 2007

Westview Girls Lacrosse will be hosting the fourth annual CIF and NFHS sanctioned tournament – The Surf, Sun & Stix Invitational.

The venue for this event  will be Westview with games being played on four fields.

The Varsity division will be playing on Saturday, March 24 and will offer two levels of play, Gold & Silver.  The Junior Varsity division will be playing on Saturday, March 31.

GRAD NITE PARTICIPATION - FOUNDATION RUMMAGE SALE

Please remember to save items for Grad Nite to sell at the Foundation rummage sale, which is scheduled for Saturday morning, April 7, and will be held in the student parking lot.

Anything you have to be sold would be greatly appreciated - furniture, books, exercise equipment, sporting goods, tools, shoes, toys, electronics, kitchen items, clothing, etc.

Donations of items can be dropped off the night before the rummage sale at a home near Canyon View Elementary (unfortunately, Grad Nite does not have storage capability prior to that).

Also, if you are willing to work a shift or two during the rummage sale in the Grad Nite fundraising effort, your help would be warmly welcomed.  (Bilingual capability, in either Spanish or Tagalog, would be fantastic!)

Please contact the Grad Nite rummage sale chair, Cindy Ruecker, at 538-0490, or by writing to heycindy@san.rr.com.  She will keep your contact information on hand until the rummage sale date is firm, and will let you know beforehand exactly where to drop off your donations (or possibly arrange for pickup of them) and/or when to work a shift that Saturday morning.

Thanks for your efforts in making Grad Nite a success.  Westview parents rock!

Counselor Accomplishments

We have six counselors on staff at Westview to service students.  A few of things they have been working on include:

  • Visiting their homerooms three times per week to remain more visible for student.

  • Balancing the master schedule

  • Having a drop in their caseload numbers to spend more time with students

  • Meeting with sophomores individually to assist with planning (will continue throughout the school year)

Counselors have an open door policy and may meet with students when they are not in class.  If you are unsure of who your child’s counselor is, contact the Wolverine Center for more information.

Course Request Forms

Attention Parents:  The time is coming to begin thinking about courses for next year.  During March, counselors will be visiting classrooms to go over the Course Request process with the students.  At that time, the students will receive Course Request Forms, their transcript, and materials to help them choose the right courses.  It is important that your student takes this process seriously, since they will be choosing their classes for the entire 2007-2008 school year.  Since the school’s master schedule is based upon our students’ Course Requests, we cannot guarantee that they will have an opportunity to change their classes next year if they change their mind.

Once you have gone over this information with your son or daughter, we encourage you to attend the informational meeting for parents.  This will be a great opportunity to have any questions regarding scheduling addressed.  The date and location will be posted on our website in March.

Upcoming College Fair

A college fair available to all District students and parents will be held in the fall at Mt. Carmel High School.  The date of the event tentatively is Tuesday, October 23, 2007.  This event will include workshops prior to the college fair.  More information will become available as we get closer to the event.  If you are a parent and would like to help by volunteering, please contact Colleen Salzetti through e-mail at cjsalz@san.rr.com

Scholarship Assistance

If you have a student who is interested in scholarship opportunities, please have them complete a Westview Scholarship Application and return to Miss Bloomfield in the Wolverine Center.  Students will be e-mailed information on scholarships in which they meet the minimum eligibility criteria.  In addition, they may receive other information via e-mail, such as internship opportunities, conferences, colleges coming to campus and more.  Visit the scholarship page for a downloadable form.

Tutoring Options

Students in need of tutoring assistance have several choices:

  • Peer Tutors on-site, one-on-one tutoring from peer counselors.  Referral form available from student support services.

  • AP Educational Services (APES) provided by Westview AP students in all subject areas. Students should visit Mrs. Vanderby’s classroom to sign up.

  • PUSD Referral List - Students may see their counselor for a list of 'for-pay' tutors throughout the district - all subject areas; many credentialed teachers.

INCOMING FRESHMEN

The first meeting for parents of incoming freshmen in the fall will be held in March.  This orientation meeting will provide information on the following topics:

  • Academic Offerings

  • Counseling & Special Programs

  • Westview Athletics

  • Westview Activities

JUNIORS

Junior Information Night

During Back to School Night on February 11th, an information workshop was held for parents of juniors with over 200 parents in attendance.  The topics covered were college entrance and planning for the senior year.  The slideshow from the workshop will be posted shortly on the counseling page of the website for those who were unable to attend.

Navy ROTC $180,000 Scholarship

The Navy ROTC has a wonderful opportunity for students to receive a $180,000 scholarship.  This scholarship includes:  100% tuition, books, dorms, etc. to over 150 colleges and universities nationwide and a monthly allowance of $250-400.  Some participating colleges include:  MIT, Penn State, Texas A & M, University of San Diego, University of Southern California, UC Berkeley and many more.  To qualify, juniors must have a SAT score of at least 530 in Critical Reading and 520 Math or an ACT score of 22 by the time they submit their application.  Students may select their own major and will become a commissioned Naval Officer upon graduation from college.  Students selected will have a year to decide, meaning they can always opt out after that first year and will not need to pay back any of the first year expenses.  Interested?  Contact Kathy Bloomfield in the Wolverine Center at (858) 780-2000 x3019 for more information.

SENIORS

Community College

Palomar College will be on campus to conduct placement assessments for English, Math and Reading.  All interested students need to follow these steps:

  1. Come to the Wolverine Center and see Miss Bloomfield to sign up for an assessment appointment, (scheduled for March 19th) and pick up the required documents to participate.

  2. Register online with Palomar to receive a Student ID number.

  3. Attend their scheduled assessment appointment.

The assessment results are good at other community colleges besides Palomar.  If you have a student who is interested in attending a community college, but is not sure where they will go, please encourage them to attend this session.
