PTA Sponsored Programs
Below is information on just some of the programs that the Tierra Bonita PTA sponsors throughout the school year.

Accelerated Reader
The Tierra Bonita PTA provides the Accelerated Reader program for our students. Check out our Accelerated Reader page for more information on this program.

CHARACTER COUNTS!
The over-arching goal of the CHARACTER COUNTS! program is to adopt the "Six Pillars of Character" (Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship) as a common framework to develop positive character throughout the school community. The program was adopted into PUSD through the generosity of an anonymous donor and is incorporated within the Tierra Bonita Community throughout the school year. For more information, see district news about Character Counts!, or visit the Character Counts! site.
CHARACTER COUNTS! is a registered trademark of the Josephson Institute of Ethics.

Good Character is Contagious, Pass it On!

Cheetah Running Club
Running Club gives students the opportunity to exercise with their friends while earning individual tokens representing personal miles completed. In addition to these tokens, students work together to accumulate mileage as a class. Each month the “Golden Shoes” are awarded to the class from each grade level that achieves the highest mileage for the month. Each grade level is also represented by a color-coded cheetah on the Running Club bulletin board in the library. The cheetahs race across the bulletin board each month for the honor of being “Top Cheetah” (the grade who runs the most miles in a month).

Running Club is offered every day at the following times:
Mondaylunch recess (11:30-12:30)
Tue/Wed before school (7:15-7:40)
Thur/Frimorning recess (9:45-10:40)

Parent volunteers pass out lap cards to the runners and cheer them on at the above times. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or if you have questions about Running Club, contact Tracy Kraft at kraftfamily@cox.net.

Reflections
Reflections is a National PTA-sponsored art competition that is held every fall. There is a theme for each year's contest, and students can submit artworks in six different art areas: visual arts, literature, photography, musical competition, dance choreography and film/video production. Judging takes place at various levels, beginning with individual schools and ending with national winners for each category. The contest is free for students, and it is an excellent way to give kids an additional chance to exercise their creative talents.

5th Grade Promotion
The fifth grade promotion committee will begin meeting in January 2009 to start planning for the promotion in June. Any 5th grade parent is welcome to participate. 4th grade parents will be needed the day of promotion to help set-up, serve food and clean up. Please contact Barbara Grant at bjgrant@hughes.net if you have any questions or would like to help out.

Assemblies
The Tierra Bonita PTA funds one or two assemblies a year for our students. Previous years' assemblies have included an opera, science planetarium, Character Rocks, and the Rope Warrior.

Site Beautification
The PTA wants to make Tierra Bonita a beautiful place to be. The Site Beautification Committee planted the welcome area by the front gate, the "Kindergarden", and painted a mural in the Health Office. Contact Jayne Moulton at jmoulton@sdcoe.k12.ca.us for more information or to volunteer.

Health and Safety
PTA sponsors several Walk to School Days during the year, as well as an annual Nutrition Week. Walk to School Day promotes walking for several reasons:
  • Physical activity
  • Teaching safe walking skills to children
  • Awareness of how walkable a community is and where improvements can be made
  • Concern for the environment
  • Reducing traffic congestion, pollution and speed near schools
  • Taking back neighborhoods for people on foot
  • Sharing time with community leaders, parents and children
Visit www.walktoschool.org and contact our local coordinator Tiffany Carapella.

Author's Fair
To encourage and highlight the importance of reading, the PTA hosts a published children's book author to visit campus and talk to students.

Family Fun Nights
The PTA hosts several Family Fun Nights throughout the school year. We sponsor a Back to School Picnic in September, Dinner at Open House in May, and several Family Movie Nights and other family events at various times throughout the year.

Parent Education Evening
We sponsor various presenters to discuss topics that affect our children.

Community Concerns
The PTA provides outreach to families in our Poway community throughout the year. Projects include the Adopt-A-Family holiday gift collection that benefits families within Poway Unified School District and a food drive in connection with Interfaith Community Services in Escondido.

SPARK Coordinator
Tierra Bonita uses the SPARK physical education program. PTA volunteers assist by rotating the equipment according to the monthly SPARK schedule. PTA purchases supplies and the program's teacher activity workbooks.

School Directory
The PTA compiles and prints a student directory each year. Collection of data takes place in August and September from information provided to PTA by families at Registration Day. The distribution of directories is in late October.

Music
The PTA provides both during school music instruction and an ahfter school Chorus for students in grades 2 through 5.

Arts Attack
Classroom art instruction is funded by the PTA. We use a program called Arts Attack that allows parent volunteers to teach art elements and principles in a developmental and sequential way.

Talent Show
PTA sponsors a Talent Show every year for 4th and 5th graders.

Hospitality
The PTA hosts a Teacher Appreciation Luncheon, provides "shoe box" lunches for teachers on Parent/Teacher Conference days, and hosts several "Principal Chats" throughout the year to facilitate communication between Mrs. Pedretti and parents.

Science Enrichment
PTA sponsors a science enrichment program for the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades.

Red Ribbon Week
Red Ribbon Week is celebrated in October as the national effort to promote drug awareness through the use of red ribbons. Students wear red ribbons all week to say they are in favor of a drug-free life.

Cultural Diversity
The PTA sponsors multi-cultural activities to make students and their families aware of the wonderful differences and similarities we share. By learning about one another and other countries, our community becomes rich with traditions and diversity.
