Back to School Night
Back to School Night is Thursday, August 28th. Adults only please.
In order to improve our communication between school and home while conserving our
natural and financial resources, we are implementing a “paperless” school. We are not eliminating all paper
sent home, but our goal is to minimize the amount of paper that we use by having event information as well as forms, letters and flyers available online.
Our plan is to unite the internet, email and our Connect-ED call out system to keep you
informed and more linked to school.
At the start of each month, we will send home a hard copy of the entire month's events with the youngest student.
Every Sunday evening, a Connect-ED will go out reminding people of the upcoming week's events.
Supporting information will be available on the website, including permission or other forms to be downloaded and returned to school.
We will have hard copies available in the office for those who do not have computer or internet access.
For those who do have access, please make a habit of checking the website. It is updated almost daily and is a great resource for those
who want to stay connected to what's happening at school and to plan ahead for what's coming up.
The most up-to-date information on school, PTA and ESS events is always available on the TBES Calendar.
See the bottom of the page for instructions on how to integrate the TBES calendar with your own online calendar.

Welcome Back to School, Meet and Greet
Meet the new principal, Joe Erpelding, on Tuesday, August 12th 10-11am in the MPR.
Registration for the 2008-2009 School Year
Registration for the new school year will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room on:
Tuesday, August 5th, 1-4 pm for students whose last names begin with A-K
Wednesday, August 6th, 1-4 pm for students whose last names begin with L-Z
If you are not able to make the date and time assigned for your last name, please feel free to come on the other date listed.
All students who plan on attending Tierra Bonita for the 2008-2009 year must register at these times. (This includes new students who enrolled in the spring.) Please click the "Continuing Student Registration" button on the left and complete and print the Required Forms. Bring these with you at the specified registration time.
New this year is the ability to update registration info online. Parents should have received a letter in the mail with their login name and password. Login to onlinereg.powayusd.com, complete "Account Activation" and then "Update Student Information".
If you do not have access to a computer, please attend your designated packet return date and the information will be provided to you.
Parents still need to attend their designated Registration Day to return the Signature Verification Form and Student Health Information form (Grade 4).
Registration Day Extravaganza
To kick-off Tierra Bonita's new paperless initiative, the PTA will be trying something entirely new this year. In the past, we've always sent home a "First Day Packet" that explained who we are, what we do, the programs that we fund to improve your students' school experience, and what we do with your generous donations. The paperwork in the packet allowed you to join the PTA, donate to support our school's programs, sign up for volunteer positions, and purchase school directories, yearbooks, and spirit wear.
This year, we are forgoing the First Day packets in the interest of saving money and the environment. Instead, we will offer sign-ups for volunteering, yearbook, directory, and t-shirts sales, and encourage donations during Registration Days on August 5th and 6th.
PTA volunteers will present information about our programs and fundraising efforts and be available to answer questions. Registration Day is your chance to join Tierra Bonita’s PTA, sign up to be listed in the student directory, order your yearbook and spirit wear, and sign up to volunteer or donate to support all the exciting activities we have planned for our children this year.
Please come prepared to spend a few extra minutes reviewing the information that we will have available and remember to bring your checkbook if you'd like to join the PTA, make a donation, or purchase yearbooks or t-shirts.
Visit PTA's Volunteer Page for a preview of available volunteer opportunities.
Summer Reading Resources
Our Reading Info page has lots of links with good recommendations for summer reading.
The San Diego County Library is hosting another Summer Reading Program this year. Kick-off is on Saturday, June 21st at 11am. Your SDCL card will also get you access to a site called NoveList
(click on Novelist K-8, enter your library card number and PIN when prompted) that can help you choose interesting and reading level appropriate books..
Book Adventure is a great site hosted by Sylvan Learning that lets kids take quizzes on books that they've read (similar to the AR quizzes that they're
used to taking at school). Kids earn points that can be redeemed for prizes. Create a parent account to monitor your child's results and set your own goals and rewards.
The San Diego Public Library (branches in Carmel Mountain, RB, Rancho Penasquitos) also has a Summer Reading Program.
Barnes and Noble is sponsoring a Summer Reading Program
that lets kids earn a free paperback book.
PTA recently sent home a handout describing the current budget crisis and what you can do to help protect our students from larger class sizes, loss of reading specialists and other interventions, and the elimination of transportation, music, and art programs. The budget is by no means a "done deal," and will be discussed and voted on by legistlators over the coming months. Our letters can make a difference! Please take a minute to complete and return the form letters sent home, or download and personalize the letters to
If you live outside of the TBES boundary, you can look up your legislators here and use the form letter provided by the Ninth District PTA to let our legislators know that education funding must be protected.
Thank you to everyone who sent in letters to their legislator. On April 8, we faxed and mailed 128 letters to Assembleyman Plescia and 125 letters to Senator Hollingsworth. Thank you also to those parents and teachers who sent in letters on their own. Every little bit counts for one large voice!
If you have not yet had the opportunity to send in your letter, please take a moment to do so. You may still send it in with your student or send it yourself.
Thanks again for doing your part to help our school.

Principal Chat Summary
For those of you who missed the Principal's Chat, here are a few of the topics that were discussed:
Parents also had questions about Accelerated Reader, the program we use to develop students' reading skills. The theory behind the AR program came from studies showing that academic achievement is tied to the number of words a student reads, so increasing reading should lead to overall academic improvement. For more information, see our AR page.
Mrs. Pedretti also talked about her desire to offer students a variety of organized activities (team sports, chess) during the lunch recess and the need for volunteers to supervise these activities. See our Volunteer page if you're interested in helping our students develop their interests and meet new like-minded friends.
The Yearbook Needs Your Photos
The yearbook committee is seeking photos from all grade levels. Photos on CD or emailed to ruskin@cox.net in .jpg format are preferred, but we are happy to accept printed copies as well. Printed photos can be dropped in the yearbook folder in the Volunteer Office. For all photos, please let us know what class and particular activity they are for. The more pictures we have, the better our yearbook will be!
Memory Tiles
PTA Site Beautification needs your help to create memory tiles at Tierra Bonita. 6"x6" tiles will be placed on concrete benches, planters, and walls around campus. Showcase your child's creativity by painting a tile, and leave a lasting memory at Tierra Bonita.
When:
Friday, March 7, 2008, 2:30-4:30 pm
Where:
Tierra Bonita Multi-Purpose Room, Covered lunch area
Cost:
$20 for the first tile, $15 each additional tile

Sincerely,

Drop Off and Pick Up Procedure Change!
Effective Monday, October 1st, the drop off and pick up procedure has changed. Please look here for more information.
Box Tops For Education
Have you seen this logo? Although most people think Box Tops only hang out on the tops of cereal boxes, they've recently been spotted on boxes of Ziploc bags, bags of Chex Mix, and boxes of Kleenex. We've also had reports of them on Betty Crocker baking mixes and several kinds of fruit snacks. Check your grocery bags - the Box Top is on Tierra Bonita's Most Wanted List and can earn us up to $20,000 a year!
Cut out the box top symbol, check the expiration date and then send them in to your child’s classroom. Also watch your Albertson’s receipts. Each time you buy ten Box Top items, you’ll find a bonus at the bottom of your receipt.
To see a complete list of participating products, track how much money Tierra Bonita has earned, or create an account with opportunities to earn even more money for Tierra Bonita, check out the Box Tops For Education website.
MyLunchMoney.com
MyLunchMoney.com is a great way to keep track of your student's lunch account balance, and you don't need to fund the account online to take advantage of the benefits. Lunch accounts funded by cash or check to the Food and Nutrition Department are also viewable online. Simply create a login account at MyLunchMoney.com and add your student using his ID number. The ID Number is a 7 digit number, which you get by adding a "1" in front of your student's lunch line PIN. For example, if the PIN they enter is 234567, the id number is 1234567. (This is also the id number that you'll see on school records.) See the TBES Lunch Info page for more details.
