Shoal Creek Technology Plan
2004-2007

Shoal Creek Mission Statement

Recognizing the unique qualities of each child, Shoal Creek is dedicated to the education of all students. Every child will have the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to develop a positive self-worth, make informed decisions, function effectively in a diverse society, and become self-sufficient, independent learners. We will encourage active involvement, cooperation, and communication between the school, child, family, and community. As a school of character we will teach and model trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.  At Shoal Creek we are committed to all students learning.

Technology Goal

Shoal Creek staff and community will create a technology- rich learning community to enhance student learning. Students must be able to use technology in order to achieve success in school and in the workplace. We will provide all students with the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to use technology effectively.

Action Strands

Curriculum

Developing and implementing curriculum that infuses technology into students’ learning, while meeting district and state curricular standards, will be a major emphasis of this plan.  The three main strands are Technology Operation, Technology Issues, and Technology Curriculum Integration. These areas are covered in detail by grade level in the PUSD Technology Standards Document.

Student Learning

All students have access to technology in their classrooms, library media center, in common use areas, and the mobile computer lab.  A local area network (LAN) is in every classroom, work area, and the wireless lab at the school site.  Students use internet-based projects to enhance research skills and report writing.  All classrooms have access to Catalog Plus to find books in the school library.  Many teachers use Power Point and other software applications for instruction to support curricular areas.  Students use computers to present information.  Scholastic Reading Inventory provides individual student assessment, reading inventories and progress reports.  MAPS assesses students in reading, language arts, and math twice a year based on progress toward standards.

Software programs for English Language Learners are available to complement small group instruction.  Students who are identified GATE, at-risk, or have special needs are afforded a variety of individualized learning opportunities through technology use.

Through the use of technology in the school environment on a regular basis, students continue to progress towards meeting the PUSD Technology Standards.

Staff Development

Staff development is based on a needs analysis and examination of all existing and proposed computer applications, both administrative and instructional.  Each year, staff will complete a survey to determine their technical knowledge as well as their ability to develop and implement these applications based on the PUSD Strategies of Learning Environment Change.  Due to the focus on MAPS testing in grades 2-5 beginning in 2004, this will be a major emphasis of staff development.  Shoal Creek Educational Foundation has purchased a mobile computer lab for the site.  Standards-based lessons developed by the site technology committee will be another focus of staff development.

Emphasis on the standards ensures that high-level content, real world problem solving and interdisciplinary learning strategies are emphasized at all levels.  Emphasis on hands-on activities in order to develop staff proficiency and knowledge is essential. The training will be geared to all levels of need, from novice to expert.  Technological expertise will come from many sources including PUSD personnel, site mentors, the community, outside agencies and students.

As a result of a strong emphasis on staff development, a high level of staff technical confidence can be attained which will evolve into self-driven activity of independent learning.  This in turn will help to further expand the use and application of technology. Consistent, meaningful staff development will allow all staff to use a variety of software programs and increase confidence in technical applications.

Communication Resources

Students and teachers who are learning about the past or solving the problems of tomorrow must communicate with others if their work is to have meaning.  Those they choose to communicate with might include other teachers, parents, city planners, researchers from around the world, national libraries or elected officials.  Using technology as a primary source of communicating with others will be accomplished by utilizing the following sources:

Local and Global Access E-Mail

Each teacher has access to a computer and local e-mail is provided to all staff.  This has revolutionized communication among staff.  Teachers access E-mail daily.  All Shoal Creek meetings, activities, and schedules are posted, updated, and regularly accessed through Microsoft Outlook.  Global Access E-mail is available to all staff through the World Wide Web.

Software applications

Programs that give students alternative ways of creating projects, such as multimedia, word processing, spreadsheet and database applications, will be used to showcase student work. Many site-licensed software programs, such as Scholastic Reading Inventory, Microsoft Office applications, Student Writing and Publishing, and various other programs are regularly used in the classrooms.

Internet

Use of the Internet in the classroom provides students and teachers access to the world.  This resource provides many research opportunities, as well as communication with other countries and cultures.  Teachers and students have immediate access to a wealth of information to enhance their learning experiences.

Web Sites

Shoal Creek has a school web site that is updated on a regular basis.  This provides information about the school to the community.  The ability of parents to access school information and communicate on-line with the site is enhanced through an Internet presence.

Infrastructure

Shoal Creek has an infrastructure that meets the current basic requirements for both staff and students.  With technology use being an ongoing school-wide goal, the staff and the community have prioritized increased equipment acquisitions.  The School Site Council and the Shoal Creek Educational Foundation will provide support for technology purchases.  The current technology hardware status is outlined in the attached graph.  Hardware status will be updated yearly.
