General Information
Parking
Please pick up and drop off students in the upper
parking lot. When you drive into the upper lot it helps tremendously if
you pull up all the way around to the front and let your child in/out at
the curb. Do not let children out of the car in the middle of the lot
unless you are parked and escorting them to the curb. Never leave your
car unattended in the loading zone. If you need to enter the school
campus for any reason, please park your car in a designated space in the
lot or on the street. Please do not park in the red zones or illegally
even if remaining inside your car.
The lower parking lot directly in front of the school
is for buses and staff parking only. There are short term visitor spaces
available directly in front of the office if you need to pick up a sick
child during the day.
Supervision
Students are not allowed on campus prior to 7:45 A.M.
Playground supervision is
provided from 7:45-8:15 A.M. each day allowing you to drop off your
child any time during that 30-minute window. (If children arrive early
they are to sit in the breakfast area until supervision begins on the
playground at 7:45 A.M.) Breakfast is available in the cafeteria daily
from 7:45-8:15 A.M. If you must have your child at school prior to 7:45
A.M. please contact E.S.S. (Extended Student Services) at 679-8946
regarding our on campus before and after school childcare program.
Students must be picked up after school by 2:55 P.M.
on M, T, Th, F, and by 1:15 P.M. on Wednesdays unless in E.S.S. or a
special after school class supervised by a teacher. If you are late to
pick up your children and they are no longer waiting in the upper lot by
the fence, please park your car in a designated space and come to the
school office.
Volunteering or Visiting Pomerado
We work hard at Pomerado to maintain a safe
environment for students. Please assist us by following these simple
steps and reading the PUSD Board policy on volunteers below.
- Whenever coming on campus report directly to the office and sign
in.
- Wear a visitors badge/sticker at all times while on campus.
- If you notice any suspicious activity, please report it to the
office immediately.
In order to implement Board Policy & Procedure 4.415,
Personnel Support Services (PSS) will process the background checks for
all District Volunteers. The background check for Level I volunteers
will be done through a check of the Megan’s Law database. Level II
volunteers will be fingerprinted for a Department of Justice (DOJ)
clearance . Volunteers may not work
with students until the school office has received a clearance from
Personnel Support Services.
Level I Volunteers
are those who work under the direct supervision of teachers or other
school employees, such as the library media technicians. Examples
include classroom or library volunteers. Level II Volunteers are
those who may have the opportunity for significant unsupervised contact
with students. Examples include SHOK or OASIS mentors.
If you would like to volunteer on campus simply come
to the office and let us know. You will need to fill out a short form,
show identification, proof of current TB testing, and sign permission
for PUSD personnel to conduct a Megan’s Law Database search. The
classroom teacher or office staff will then notify you as soon as you
are cleared to volunteer. Thank you for adhering to this policy. It will
make Pomerado an even safer place for children.
Time Away from School
When students are not at school we can’t teach them!
Please make regular school attendance a priority for your family. Please
assist your child in getting to school on time each morning, fed and
ready to learn. Please try, whenever possible, to schedule appointments
for Wednesday afternoons on our minimum day or in the afternoons other
days. We work hard to eliminate classroom interruptions during the first
three hours of school when the core subjects are taught. We appreciate
not having students miss school for vacations or trips. Off campus
contracts and work assignments are available for absences of 5 days or
more when necessary but they do not include the direct instruction
provided in the classroom environment.
Homework Policy
The purpose of homework is to practice, reinforce or
apply acquired skills and knowledge. Homework is the responsibility of
the student, and as students mature they are more able to work
independently. Therefore, parents play a supportive role through
monitoring completion of assignments, encouraging students’ efforts, and
providing an environment conducive for learning. Parents are encouraged
to inform the teacher immediately of any problems with the student and
their homework.
In the primary grades (K-3), homework should consist
primarily of reading and a limited number of independent exercises to
reinforce previously taught basic skills.
At the upper grades (4-5), homework should primarily
consist of reading, practice in mathematics, application of writing
skills, and beginning research. At this level, homework should be
designed to build independent study habits.
Pomerado’s homework practices follow the Poway
Unified School District Board Policy.
Bicycles
Students must be in grades 3, 4, or 5, and have a
signed Pomerado bike permit to ride a bike to school. The permission
forms are available by request in the school office. Children must wear
a helmet and provide a lock for his/her bicycle. Bicycles must be locked
in the designated bike rack during school hours. Bicycles may not be
ridden on school grounds. The school is not responsible for damage or
loss of bicycles.
Medication at School
If your child is on medication, a Physician’s
Recommendation for Medication form must be obtained from the school
office, completed by your physician, and returned to school. No
medication may be given at school without this form. An adult must
bring the medication to the school office. Children may at no time have
medication in their possession. This includes aspirin, inhalers, cough
drops, etc.
Supply Lists
If your child’s teacher is requesting extra classroom
supplies the list will be sent home on the first day of class. Pomerado
is a public school and provides the necessary items to fulfill class
assignments/projects. Please let your child’s teacher know if you are
unable to obtain any suggested/requested items and they will be provided
for your child.
Lost and Found
Please clearly label all jackets, backpacks, lunch
containers, hats, and more that your children bring to school. We have
Lost & Found racks located at the back of the multipurpose room. If your
child loses an item please check their regular classroom and also the
Lost & Found racks in the MPR. The Lost & Found items are regularly
displayed next to the lunch area for the students to reclaim. Those
items not collected at the end of each month are donated to charity.
Right to Request Teacher & Paraprofessional
Qualifications
As a parent of a student in PUSD, you have the right
to know the professional qualifications of the classroom teachers who
instruct your child. Specifically, you have the right to the following
information about each of your child’s classroom teachers:
Whether or not the teacher has met California’s
licensing requirements for the grade level(s) and core academic
subject(s) taught by the teacher; If the teacher is teaching without
meeting state licensing requirements which have been waived by the state
for special circumstances; The educational level and subject area (field
of discipline) of the teacher’s college degree major and any graduate
degrees or certificates in what subjects; And, if your child is
receiving Title 1 services from paraprofessionals, his or her
qualifications. You may access information about teacher qualifications
from the following website:
https://teachercred.ctc.ca.gov/teachers/index/jsp.

Pomerado P.T.A.
and Education Foundation
We are fortunate to have a very generous parent
community at Pomerado. While parents give hundreds of hours each year
assisting with homework and supporting the teacher’s efforts, there are
two formal parent organizations which generate an incredible amount of
support for student learning at our school: the Pomerado Parent Teacher
Association and the Pomerado Educational Foundation. Below are
descriptions of the role and relationship of the PTA and Foundation.
Pomerado Parent Teacher Association
The Pomerado PTA is a member of a national
organization of Parent Teacher Associations who join together: To
support and speak on behalf of children and youth in the schools, in the
community, and to local, state, and national legislatures, To assist
parents in developing the skills they need to raise and protect their
children, and To encourage parent and public involvement in the public
schools of this nation. Our PTA assists our students through working
with Pomerado staff to develop yearly programs and support those
programs through fundraising activities. The PTA also supports classroom
teachers, organizes volunteers, supports reading through book fairs, and
supports fine arts, assemblies, and physical education. The PTA also
works with the District PTA on legislative issues and district-wide
programs to support educational opportunities for all our children.
PTA activity is governed by national and local
guidelines that limit the type of fundraising, protect against
liability, and restrict the carrying over of funds from year to year. We
are extremely grateful for the thousands of volunteer hours dedicated by
our parents to keep our PTA going. All families are invited to join the
PTA at the start of school. If you have any questions or would like to
help out please leave a message for the PTA President, Lisa Othmer, in
the office.
Pomerado Foundation
The Pomerado Foundation assists in the development of
educational programs that promise significant contributions to the
education of Pomerado students, and provides additional financial
support for technology at Pomerado Elementary. The Foundation Board of
Directors meets monthly to determine projects and review goals. Over the
years the Foundation has raised funds for classroom technology
purchases, supplies, new computers, software, LCD projectors, and
doc-u-cams our newest instructional tool.
To meet their goals, the Foundation has worked hard
to build fundraising opportunities that do not include having students
sell products. This year the Foundation will hold a "no fuss" fall
fundraising campaign as well as their annual spring time Fun Run.
The Foundation is not restricted in the type of
fundraising or the specificity of how to spend money and can carry money
over from year to year to support long term goals. We are fortunate to
have a group of parents with the vision and commitment to create this
incredible opportunity for our school and especially for our children.
If you are interested in helping or joining the Foundation please leave
a message in the office for the Foundation President, Mary Lugo.

Older Students
We will be distributing information for our upper
grade students describing in more detail the District policies outlined
below. This general overview is designed to give general information for
parents.
Academic Honesty
In support of the District’s Academic Honesty Policy
3.4, students are expected to demonstrate acts of honesty at all times.
Teacher and staff will support and enforce all District rules of
academic honesty and provide a learning environment that does not allow
or tolerate dishonesty. Any student who violates the rules of the
Academic Honesty Policy will be subject to disciplinary action.
Harassment
The following applies to adults on campus as well as
fourth and fifth grade students as mandated by the California Education
Code. In school harassment may include threats, intimidation, slurs,
epithets, verbal or physical abuse. Bullying is a serious form of
harassment and may include physical, verbal or exclusionary practice by
a student or group of students. Sexual harassment includes a pattern of
unwelcome sexual advances, and other unwanted verbal, visual or physical
contact of a sexual nature. Hate motivated behavior is any act or
attempted act against a student or staff member that is motivated all or
in part by hostility to the victim’s race, ethnicity, religion, sexual
orientation or gender. PUSD Board Policy and California Education Code
specifically prohibit harassment of the nature described above.
If a student or adult feels harassment is occurring,
they should inform a parent, teacher, or administrator. An interview
will be conducted by District personnel and when required, law
enforcement. All complaints are confidential. If a formal complaint is
submitted, a special District employee will contact the person making
the complaint. If the person feels the issue has not been resolved
satisfactorily, they may forward the complaint to the District
Superintendent. If it is not resolved there, he or she may pursue
resolution through the Board of Trustees. Appeal rights also extend to
the California Department of Education or civil courts.
Complaint Procedures
If a parent has a concern regarding school personnel,
the procedure at Pomerado is dictated by PUSD Board policy. If possible,
we hope you will first contact the teacher or employee regarding the
concern. If this does not resolve the problem, the next step would be to
speak to the principal. The next steps would involve contacting the
assistant superintendent and then the superintendent. At anytime during
this process, or in the event the complaint cannot be resolved, the
parent may file a formal written complaint with the District. This
triggers a series of formal interventions to resolve the complaint.

Pomerado’s Top Ten Rules
Here are the school rules all students are
responsible for following. Individual teachers may have a variety of
other rules/procedures in their classrooms that will be shared with
students the first weeks of class and with parents at Back-to-School
Night. All students are taught the six pillars of character:
trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and
citizenship throughout the school year.
Respect and obey all adults.
Walk to and remain in assigned areas.
Take care of all property and equipment.
Keep hands, feet, and objects to self.
Use only kind words and actions toward others.
Respect the rights and property of others.
Talk quietly at appropriate times.
Complete class work and homework to the best of your ability.
Listen and follow directions.
Be prepared and accept responsibility.
These rules are posted in every classroom at Pomerado. If a student
chooses not to follow these rules one or more of the following may
occur: parent contact, conference with student, time out, loss of
privileges, detention, referral to principal, in-school suspension or
out-of-school suspension.

cannot be used during the instructional day. Since students have
access to classroom and office telephones to call their parents for
legitimate reasons, cellular phones cannot be used at recess or
lunch. Pomerado assumes no liability for the loss or damage of the
devise or its misuse by another person. If a student’s cell phone

Computerized Call Out System
Pomerado has the ConnectEd computerized call out system that will
occasionally call your home. We begin our messages stating that it is
Pomerado School calling. Please don’t hang up! We utilize this system to
improve parent communication regarding important upcoming school events
as well as to inform parents of absences and tardies. If the automated
system calls regarding an absence please stay on the line to leave a
voice mail message at the end for Mrs. Blalock, our Attendance Clerk,
explaining the reason for the absence.

Parent Current Contact
Information
PUSD is working to improve home school communication in the event of
any emergency. Please keep our office informed of any changes in your
