The 08-09 Challenge
Dr. Newman put forth a challenge to
the students and staff ...
"Make MRES a 10/10 school ... and I will shave my
head."
The students and staff responded! We grew by 36 points in just one year ~ more than any other PUSD elementary, middle, or high school ~ significantly closing the achievement gap, and raising our API to 930.
We won't know if we are a 10/10 school until next Spring, but Dr. Newman is a man of integrity and kept his word. On September 25, 2009, at the weekly Friday Flag in front of PUSD's Superintendent, Dr. Don Phillips; Area Superintendent, Diane Cantelli; the entire student body, staff, and many from the community, he nervously sat in a barber chair and had his head shaved.
