Midland Elementary

Midland's History

Midland was first built in 1925 to replace some old school buildings on Community Road. It started off with only a few classrooms, but in 1947 more classrooms were built. Midland School in the past was known as Pomerado Elementary, and was part of the Pomerado School District. The Pomerado School started out with two buildings. It also had an auditorium, kitchen, office, inside restrooms, and a basement. Another building was built later.  In 1960 the name of  Pomerado Elementary was changed to Midland Elementary.    It first started out educating about 60 children grades Kindergarten-12th.

The first teacher at Midland was a male. The teacher salary for one month was $55.00. At that time the custodian also served as the bus driver. D. O'Connel served as the first school board clerk. Room 15 A, which is not very large, used to be the superintendent's office. Rooms 15 and 16 were located in one building, and rooms 6 and 7 were located in another. Those twin buildings were two of the first buildings to start schooling children in the late 1940's. Our former resource teacher,  Mrs.Appleby, who retired in 1996, attended  school here in 1938.

Midland's Murals

Several murals adorned the Midland Elementary School campus before it was rebuilt.  These murals were created by parents and painted by students at Midland over the years.  While we are thrilled to finally be on our wonderful new campus, we will miss these beautiful works of art.
