School demographics
Located in Rancho Peñasquitos, a community in northern San Diego County, we serve 557 students in grades kindergarten through five. Los Peñasquitos students represent a cross-section of our community. Thirty-seven percent of students receive free or reduced-price lunch, thirty-two percent of our children are English Language Learners, and twenty-eight languages are spoken at our school. A significant percentage of the children come from middle and upper-middle class families.
Academic Performance Index (API)
The Academic Performance Index (API) is a number assigned by the state to every public school. It is calculated by using the results of the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program. The API ranges from a low of 200 to a high of 1000. Los Peñasquitos Elementary currently has an API score of 906, placing the academic performance of Los Penasquitos students solidly among the top ten percent of schools in the state.

Los Penasquitos has achieved exceptional API growth with all subgroups. As you can see from the following chart, every subgroup of students performs very well.

Statewide Ranks
School API scores are sorted form highest to lowest and then divided into 10 equal groups ranked from highest (10) to lowest (1). This determines the statewide rank. Los Penasquitos Elementary School is a ten, placing it in the top ten percent of schools throughout the state.
Similar School Ranking
The state then determines through a sophisticated statistical process which 100 schools in the state are most similar to each school. These schools are then likewise sorted from highest achieving to lowest, and then divided into ten equal groups. Schools in the highest performing group are ranked as ten in the similar schools ranking. Los Penasquitos is also in this top group.
We are proud that Los Peñasquitos Elementary School is one of only 16 schools in San Diego County to obtain the very prestigious honor of being named a 10-10 school, which means that it earned a “10” ranking in both statewide ranking and similar school ranking!
