Bernardo Heights Middle School is a closed campus. No student may leave the school grounds without special permission from the office. In the event that it becomes necessary for a student to be taken out of school, a parent must come to the office to inform the Attendance Assistant (Marsha Peterson) of this need. Mrs. Peterson will then send for the student.
1. The student must be checked out through the Attendance Office, even if he/she has been issued a release slip. Students must check into the Attendance Office upon returning to school. 2. A student will always be given a Readmit slip when returning to class – INSIST UPON IT. 3. Student may not be released early by teacher without permission from the office. 4. No student may be out on campus without a pass unless during break or his/her assigned lunch period. This includes trips to the restroom, health office or library. Students must present a pass to the noon duty supervisors if returning to their classroom during lunch. 5. Students are to clear the campus at the end of the day by 3:30, unless they are involved in supervised activities or clubs, or participate in the after-school program. 6. Staff should make sure that every visitor to campus checks into the office upon arrival and report any suspicious activity to the office immediately. |

Parties are to be limited to special occasions and should occur sparingly. It is best to link parties to direct instructional content.
Nutritional Guidelines: The Board of
Education recognizes that students need adequate, nourishing food in
order to grow and develop a good foundation for their physical
well-being. The Board shall provide for a complete food service program
as the needs of the students and the financial capacity of the District
permit. The Board recognizes that the lunch program is an important
complement to the nutritional responsibilities of parents/guardians.
The Board believes that:
A national school lunch program will be provided at all District locations. Separate sales of milk and other beverages shall be made in all schools. Separate sales of food items on an a la carte basis are also authorized for grades six through twelve. All foods shall be procured in the manner required by law, and menus shall be closely coordinated with offerings of surplus commodities, which shall meet the nutritional requirements of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. The Food Service Department shall arrange for the purchase, delivery, and storage of all food items and supplies. |

One effective method of communication is the DAILY BULLETIN. It consists of a student and a staff section. First period teachers are to read the bulletin to the students each day. It is also a good idea to post the bulletin in a prominent place in the classroom for student access. Currently, the bulletin is sent out via email. It is also printed on paper and available in the teachers’ workroom. Students may also view the bulletin in the glass case in the lunch quad. |

Each school in PUSD is required to hold monthly emergency drills to help keep students and staff prepared to react appropriately in various emergency situations.
Fire Drills: Held monthly. The fire alarm rings and all students and staff get up and leave the classrooms in orderly lines and follow their prescribed pathway to the lower fields. Each classroom has a placard with the teacher’s name and room number on it that is carried by the first person in line to lead the students down to the fields.
Intruder/Lockdown: An announcement is made over the PA system stating that we are having an intruder/lockdown drill. Doors are locked, blinds drawn, and students assume duck-and-cover position beside or under their desks.
Disaster Drill: Held once each semester. General announcement made over PA system. Duck-and-cover followed by complete evacuation to lower fields.
All emergency procedures are outlined in detail in your red emergency binder. This binder and your red emergency back pack should be taken with you for all drills. |
|
Equipment shall not be removed from the school grounds without prior approval of the Principal or assistant principal. A PUSD Equipment Loan Record form AD-10 is required before borrowing equipment. See Karen Rockafellor for the form. |
|
Each teacher will be issued a classroom key and an AH-11 key which will open the gate between the MPR and the office, the teachers’ lounge/workroom, the staff restroom on the back of the 500 building, and the restrooms in the MPR.
Per Administrative Procedure Section 6.22.2, all keys will be signed for and issued by the site (Karen Rockafellor) and shall be returned to the site prior to termination of service with the District, or upon request.
Keys shall be duplicated only by Maintenance and Operations.
Key distribution shall be made in a manner to preserve security and protect District property. At no time shall keys be issued to students or non-employees. The number of keys issued will be minimized and limited to actual need. When feasible, keys issued to substitute employees shall be collected by the immediate supervisor or manager at the end of each work shift.
Lost Keys: Take every precaution to see that your key does not get lost or misplaced. It is not to be left in your mailbox or desk. Keys lost by personnel shall be reported immediately to the principal.
Teachers are not allowed to give keys to students to use. A duplicate key to each classroom will be maintained in the office and issued to a substitute when needed. |
| Any teacher leaving the school grounds during the school day should inform the office of his/her location in case of an emergency. It is the teacher’s responsibility to sign out beforehand. There is a sign-out sheet in the office for this purpose located on the attendance counter. Possible family emergencies, parent contacts, etc. make it absolutely necessary that each teacher can be located or contacted. If you have a requested change from the regular working day (see teacher work day hours) for more than one time, submit a written request to the principal. Then sign out in the sign-out book and indicate duration of time this change will be in effect. Teachers who would like to arrive earlier or later than the regular time schedule may submit a written request to the principal for approval. |
|
Regular Mail: Each teacher has a mailbox in the teachers’ workroom. It is important that teachers check their mailbox before school, prior to leaving school each day, and at any other convenient time.
Students are not allowed to distribute mail to the teachers’ mailboxes or to pick up mail from the teachers’ mailboxes at any time.
Correspondence with other schools in the District or with the District Office may be handled through the school mail. Personal mail is not to be included with District mail.
Outgoing mail can be given to Karen Rockafellor for mailing.
District Policy states that, “Electronic data, including email which is transmitted over the District computer resources and/or through the Internet, is not confidential. The transfer of information which is intended to be confidential should not be sent through the District’s computer resources.”
Additionally, using District technology for a commercial business such as buying or selling products or promoting services for personal gain and/or profit is prohibited. District resources cannot be used to communicate, advertise, or solicit non-district sponsored events or political/religious activities.
TIPS FOR WRITING EFFECTIVE E-MAILS
**Never send a hasty, irritated response to an annoying e-mail – jobs have been lost that way. |

According to PUSD Guidelines for Student Participation in Extracurricular Activities, students must meet the criteria listed below, each quarter, in order to participate during the following quarter in school-sponsored activities. Please note that the first semester of the school year provides a “fresh start” for students. Eligibility does not carry over from the prior year. However, students can become ineligible at any time based on poor behavior as determined by an administrative review team comprised of an administrator, teacher(s), and the student’s counselor. These activities include, but are not limited to, dances, sports teams, concerts, trips such as Disneyland, and/or Knott’s Berry Farm, and the 8th grade themed event.
Students must have:
· GPA of 2.0 or above · No “U’s” in CONDUCT · No HOME SUSPENSIONS · No OUTSTANDING SCHOOL FINES OR DEBTS |
|
At the beginning of each school day, the Pledge of Allegiance will be given in each classroom during the morning P.A. announcements. Teachers should encourage students to take part in the Pledge by standing and serving as models to students during the recitation of the Pledge. |
| Per PUSD policy,
the following activities and items are prohibited on campus:
